What does everyone think of this? I wouldn't mind bidding but the few photos I found of Piazza in the Road Grey show the Y lined up in a different sport.

Since you are a huge Piazza fan. I would think the grail for any Piazza collector would be the jersey in the current Goldin Auction. It appears to be Mike Piazza's major league debut jersey and the jersey he wore when he got his very first hit. Probably the best Piazza jersey I have ever seen.

Tagging looks good to me, and you have to realize he would've had multiple road unis that were tagged.

That jersey does not have Piazza's typical customization (+1 inch body -1 sleeves). In fact if you look at the size tag 50 it's close to the bottom of the jersey which means the jersey is way shorter than what Mike used.

The only time I've never seen these typical customizations consistently on Piazza jerseys was 2004.

Here's a link to a previous discussion on Piazza jerseys.

I have been approached by many collectors about this jersey this past week, and here are my thoughts:

1. David has already covered this point -- the jersey is missing 3 special customization flag tags that I would expect to see: 1" extra body length, 1" sleeve shortening, 1/2" sleeve circumference width added.

2. I am not at all impressed by the light use of this jersey. A good Piazza jersey would show tons more use, and lots of pilling where the catcher's equipment met and rubbed against the poly fabric.

3. The only photos I was able to come across of Piazza on the road in 2001 following 9/11 show him in a gray jersey WITHOUT the 9/11 embroidery. I don't know why this is the case, but can speculate that it was due to the sleeve alterations that Piazza had that no other player on the squad did.

4. I own 2 and have handled other jerseys from the gray road set that the Mets wore post 9/11, and these are some of the most beaten up jerseys I have ever seen. This one doesn't seem to fit the mold.

5. If this was THE post 9/11 road jersey that Piazza wore on field, I would estimate its value at $2,000 - $2,500. You have to ask yourself why a seller would put such a valuable item on ebay of all places (where buyers generally look for huge bargains) and start it at $1.00 with no reserve? To further add to this, the jersey has 40 PRIVATE bids on it and has not even been bid up to a quarter of its value.

I did see a Topps card with piazza in a NYPD hat with the road grey, and the Y and Velcro closure didn't match up the same from what I saw.

It's a Topps card called "united we stand" with piazza on it.

It sold for almost 900, well below market for it if it were legitimate- but also well above considering it may be a bogus jersey....

Anybody think this jersey is a KrukCards jersey remade into a piazza?
