A review of Bill Melton's personal H & B records documents Melton's first use of model P89xl occurring in 1976 (Bicentennial) with two separate orders totaling 24 bats. During the 1977 - 1979 label period, his records document two orders as follows:

3/11/1977 / P89xl / 34.5 inches / 32 oz / FB finish / 6 bats
4/26/1977 / P89xl / 35 inches / 32 oz. / FB finish / 12 bats.

Based on the length of the 1977 bat you have, you can tie it specifically to one of the two 1977 orders. Note that the 4/26/1977 order is Melton's last documented order in his H & B records.
