Just won a Tony Perez LS R43 1984-85 game used bat. It's 35.5 inches long and weighs 33.6 ounces. Was wondering if you could pin it down for me? Thanks,
Greg

Hi Greg--

Between 1983 - 1985 Perez was shipped 35.5 inch Model R43 bats for his professional use on the following dates:

2/7/83 33 oz. Flame treated 12 bats
4/4/83 same as above
5/10/83 24 bats same as above
4/2/84 24 bats same as above
2/5/85 33 oz Natural finish 6 bats
4/8/85 33 oz Flame treated 12 bats

During that period, Perez also used 35 inch R43 bats. During that period, 34 inch Perez bats were used for various promotional activities by MLB.

To try to be a bit more specific, check the size of the oval; label-- if it is the "large new label," measuring approx 2.5" by 4.5" it was manufactured between 1980-1983.

If it has the smaller version of the "new label" approx 2.25" by 3.75" and has the large 125 within the oval as seen in 1980-1982, the bat was manufactured between 1982 1/2 to 1984.
If it has the smaller oval as above, and a smaller version of 125, it was manufactured between mid 1983 and 1985

If the bat has a surface, or "foil stamped" Perez signature on the barrel, it was manufactured in 1985.

Hopefully, the above will help pinpoint the bat more specifically to one or two of the above orders.

Good Luck,

Foil Stamped? How can you tell the difference? It's lookin' like it's an 84-85 bat. That's what Tuabe had it at. A mid-80's Red's bat. But, I was just trying to pinpoint the year. LMK. Thanks,
Greg

Hi Greg--

During a portion of 1985 (and 1986 also) some H & B pro bats were made with "surface'." or "foil" stamping of the player's name... this stamping is not deeply burned in as the rest of the labeling on those bats. If your bat happens to have that type of stamping of Perez' name in combination with 1983 (third version) / 1984 / 1985 labeling, it could be narrowed down to one of the specific orders in 1985, depending on the finish as noted above.
