Just picked up a 1980 Yankees game used pinstriped #46 jersey. The name has been torn out of the tag, but the rest of the tag is present. It's "80 1"(1980, set 1). The remaining tagging is consistant with another 1980 Yankees pinstripe that I have so I'm confident that it's genuine. No number change on the back either.

I know Mattingly made his 1st appearance with the Yankees in September, 1982 and wore #46.

I know that this jersey was used in 1981 as you can tell that the 1981 Elston Howard tribute black armband was at one time there.

Since we're talking #46, I'm thinking that this may be Mattingly's 1st jersey.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
George

"in 1981, Gene Nelson wore #46 part part of the year"

I know, and he was gone by the time Mattingly came up in late 1982.

In 1982, Shane Rawley wore #46 when he came to the Yankees in a trade but he switched to #26 soon afterward, thus freeing it up for Mattingly's September call-up.

take a look at his 1984 topps cards where he is wearing #46, what arm was the armband once on? do the pinstripes line up?

He changed to #23 on his 23rd birthday (April 20th 1984). I was there. No idea why I remember that, but I do. He went 3 for 4 as the right fielder.

TFig, thanks for the scan of the rookie card. I'll compare it tonight when I get home. The armband was on the left side, the arm showing on the card.
