Is this jersey correct, as I am getting conflicting answers in my research? The two main items are these.

1) Did Oakland have an 's after the "A" in 1969? I can't find a clear frontal shot of an A's jersey from the year. The M&N Reggie Jackson replica jersey has the 's.

2) Is the 100 Anniversary patch in the correct position? It appears more to the right of the "A" in action shots.

Thanks to all who have any thoughts.

Sammy,
is this the jersey from the memory lane auction? the 69 A's did not have the 's next to the A it was a change for the '70 season. this jersey should not have both the 's next to the A and the 1969 patch on it. most likely someone saw the year designator and added the patch not realizing that the 's shouldn't be there for 1969. the patch on most A's jerseys in 1969 is located more toward the armpit than this one is.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the replies and info.

This is the jersey from the Memory Lane auction.

I had seen this previously for sale and wondered why it was for sale so soon again.

Couldn't really find any clear photos, but once I posted here my questions were answered. I found some other sources for additional verification too.

As others have noted:

Apparently the ('s) was not added until 1970, and the 100th Anniversary is in the wrong place. Plus the size is extremely big for skinny Joe D.

Here is a photo of Joe and Reggie from Corbis taken on June 15, 1969. There is not a ('s) on the vest.

I see why this vest was for sale again only a couple of months after it sold in the GF auction.

Grey Flannel strikes out again, and somebody took a hit.

Sammy,

the info came from the McAuliffe (actually Stahl & Dean) order sheets from '68,'69.

Joe wasn't skinny at all - he's as big, if not bigger, than Reggie on that photo. I have an old Camel smokes ad from 1941-42 with Joe wearing a white fitting t-shirt. What amazed me was just how well put together he was.

The jersey itself though has to be a fake, and luckily by someone failing to do all the homework.

I think "fake" is at this point may be too strong of a term for this jersey.

Being able to only go by the photos and without seeing the jersey in person, as far as style, size, tagging, numbering, ect the jersey checks out. This jersey could just be a legitimate '69 that was changed to a '70 style by the A's as they did recycle '69's to '70 and had a patch added later by some individual that didn't realize the 's shouldn't be there for '69. Personally, I'd like to see it just to figure out what it is. One concern I do have is that it was written up/authenticated by PSA/DNA as being unaltered which is clearly in error. If this forum is going to point out the mistakes by Lampson, Mears, Gernay et al you'd have to include this jersey by PSA/DNA in the mix, as the most simple of checks would have revealed it is clearly not in an unaltered state. Finally, if this jersey sold in the $2000 range someone could have a very very merry xmas.

The 1969 patch along with the "'s" on the "A's" just raises the red flags for me. I can't see any reason why both would adorn the same jersey. I did though find something similar on a Leland's August 2001 auction:

1969 Catfish Hunter Game Worn Jersey

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f95/joeryan33/c10765.jpg

Road yellow sleeveless model is a great early style from the Hall of Fame right hander. Wear is spectacular, though some of this can be accounted for by a second life in the minor leagues. This afterlife resulted in the "A" on the chest being removed, then replaced later with an apostrophe and the letter "s." This was done in error-the jersey only had the "A" originally. Other than that, the jersey is 100% original. Number "27" on front and back, with Major League Baseball Centennial patch under left arm. Tagging in tail is "Tim McAuliffe [size] 46" with "69" year tag. Signed in perfect black sharpie. Accompanying jersey is a framed display (13x20") with a signed 8x10" photo and a 1966 Kansas City A's payroll check endorsed by Hunter. All sig's are NRMT.
