1989 Jose Canseco Issued All Star Jersey

I just purchased this jersey off Ebay and Was curious about a few things. It has the Velcro in between the 2nd and 3rd buttons. It has the Rawlings tag inside the hem and a size 48, which he did wear in 1989. It looks like a tagging from 90-91. It doesn't have a nameplate, the letters are sewn on the jersey, I've never seen that before. The autograph looks to be an early signature, as Jose never put his number early in his career. It has the All Star patch too. Jose never played in the game but was voted in by the fans. His first game of the season was July 13, as he was recovering from off season surgery. I know for sure its not a scoreboard jersey, but really don't understand a few of the things about it. Your opinions are greatly appreciated, Thanks Dan

Your pics are not working and for some reason are zip files.

This is simply my opinion. I don't fancy myself a Canseco jersey expert and I've not seen this jersey up close but...

It looks like a retail jersey that someone removed the jock tag and had it sewn to the inside to be more like a gamer. I've never seen Canseco wear an A's jersey without a name plate and even in 89 I would expect any of his jerseys to be longer than that. Dude is 6'4".

I don't think its a retail jersey. There is no evidence of a tag in the collar, as all retail jerseys have a tag in the collar. Plus the Velcro in between the buttons. I also have a 1989 World Series jersey that has a T in the tagging, which it was tapered. Putting the all star patch on the jersey makes it right away an issued and not a gamer. Someone to go through all that trouble to alter the jersey and make just an issued, makes no sense.

The no nameplate thing is what bothers me the most. I suggest trying to find pics of the other A's players whom played in the game. I think 3 or 4 played that year including McGwire, Stewart, Steinbach ect.. Then seeing if you can see any nameplate. Feel free to message me phillipriddell at hotmail.com and I can point you in the right direction.

I have owned a retail Canseco jersey that had velcro between the buttons. It was an Oakland road jersey made by Rawlings.

It 's possible that it is a legit game issued jersey. The lettering looks good on the NOB. I wouldn't touch any Oakland Canseco jersey from that period without a name plate though.
