1985 Whitey Herzog jersey in SCP

I am just absolutely dying about the activity on this REPLICA jersey. It's at $6,600 before juice with hours to go before this auction ends... and it was made to be a display on the wall of Ozzie's restaurant. Sure, they're saying it's game used, but I know better.

This supposed 1985 jersey has a NOB that uses letters that the Cardinals didn't use until 1989. The jersey was auctioned with other inventory from Ozzie's restaurant. Because it was framed, the back wasn't visible. But, when it showed up in the buyer's case at the next Winter Warm Up and the back could be viewed, it was obvious the lettering was wrong. There was one other difference -- the buyer (now the seller) had Whitey sign the front. I assume Whitey had no problem agreeing it was "game used" because the buyer was a friend and former team employee. I told the seller what was wrong with it; a Cardinals museum employee told the seller what was wrong with it. Yet, it eventually ended up on eBay and in the collection of the current (deceased) consignor.

Here's how you can differentiate the lettering. In 1985, the letters were about 2 3/4" tall. In 1989, they were about 3 1/2" tall. Visually, the difference is especially obvious when you look at the negative space on the R and G -- what looked like square openings in 1985 were rectangular in 1989. Below, I compare the jersey at auction with a 1981 Herzog; below that are Rich Hacker jerseys from 1987 and 1989, and below those is a Mike Jorgensen from 1985. I also have a 1985 Brian Harper (not pictured).

I sent SCP a message via its website explaining the problem and gave them my phone number if they wanted to know more about the jersey's provenance. I received no reply, and the jersey was not pulled.

It's now at $9,663 and the auction is not over yet. That's $11,600 with hammer. For a replica.

        It ended at $11,596.

I know SCP is supposed o be a premier auction house, but they drop the ball more than most others do when it comes to questionable game used jerseys.
