Hey Guys,

Here are the two pennants I mentioned that I picked up last month. Finally got a camera to work to photograph them. Loved seeing those other two pennants in the other post. If you want to see crazy pennant prices, check out the Barry Halper auction catalogues (I'll have to look, they may even be in there, I don't know).

Anyway, here's the reason I have no allowance left for my baseball memorabilia fund.

Happy New Year guys.

Wow, beautiful pennants. That custom framing job would have really hurt my memoribilia budget, let alone the pennants.

Stunning pieces and displays Greg. Did you buy them from a fellow collector?

Hi Mike,

I did buy them from another BoSox collector. Great Guy. He actually put them in the frames. All I had to do is hang them on the walls. Good thing my wife is a huge Sox fan. Our bedroom is slowly but surely decorated in pre-1920s Red Sox. You can see our third pennant in my little picture next to HiNeighbor.

Greg

By the way, anybody out there know why I use "HiNeighbor"? Has to do with both my hobbies.

Well...I know you have an amazing beer collection Greg. Is it what I would say when I knock on your door to look at your collection while drinking beer with you? Either that or there is a beer manufacturer next to Fenway?

Hey Mike,

You're pretty much on the right track.

During the 1950s and into the 60s, the principle broadcaster for the Red Sox was Curt Gowdy. The principle sponsor for the broadcasts at that time was the Narragansett Brewing Company, one of the breweries my dad and I collect. The slogan of the brewery, repeated each and every broadcast by Mr. Gowdy, was "Hi Neighbor, Have a 'Gansett". It became one of the most well known slogans throughout New England.

Although Curt's era doesn't fit into my Sox collection, he's well represented in our Beer collection. Here are a few items we have. The fellow in the 1947 Braves/Sox schedule is actually Jim Britt who preceded Curt in the broadcast booth.

Sadly, as many of you know, we lost Curt just last year.

R.I.P. Mr. Gowdy

Greg

By the way. If you ever get to Rhode Island, Mike (or anyone else for that matter), my door is always open. Would love to share a cold one with you.

Did anyone happen to see all of the really nice early 1900s baseball pennants that an ebay seller had last month? I can't find a link anymore, but there were a bunch of early Red Sox, Giants, Athletics and other pennants. A few auctions ended early before the seller wised up and let the rest run. I think most of them went between $1,000-$3,000 each. Most of them I had never seen before. That was one lucky seller....I don't think they had a clue what they had value wise.

I do remember them Dan. As good as the ebay auctions were in November, they are stinking in January. I havn't seen many exciting items recently.

January has been very good to me....I was able to pick up an Nebraska Indians cabinet that I needed and was also able to land a copy of Guy Green's first book on the Indians - one that I was beginning to think was just an urban legend. I was also able to pick up a 1910 storefront window picture of Gimbel's dept store in Philly that I will take a better scan of and post here when I get it....it shows pictures of the 1910 Cubs and A's in their display.

Dan, I'm curious about your strong interest in the Nebraska Indians. Is there a story behind it?

slidekellyslide

Not really a story other than they were from Lincoln which is where I am from. I also have a strong interest in local history and have contributed to the Nebraska Minor League baseball website.

http://marian.creighton.edu/~besser/baseball/second.html

I am amazed by how big they were at the turn of the century across the midwest and northeastern united states and very few people today have ever heard of them. I think they are an important part of baseball history and their story hasn't been told yet (other than one chapter in a great book by Jeffrey Powers-Beck "The American Indian Integration of Baseball")

Congrats Dan on two wonderful pick ups right in your area of focus. That Cabinet looks great. I can't imagine there many out there like that. Do you have any other NI cabinets?

I've got one other cabinet - I have seen about 4 or 5 different that I don't have by doing various google searches.

btw Joe, you're bat should be on the way to you tomorrow -I thought it had been sent out already, but it hadn't...my brother does all of my ebay stuff for me.

Greg, the 1915 Red Sox pennant is exceptional! If you paid a dollar less than $4,000 for it, then you got a bargain.

On that batch of turn-of-the-century pennants offered on E-Bay last month, only one significant pennant ended early -- an incredible 1915 Red Sox pennant of a style that hasn't been offered publicly since a July, 1998 Mastro auction. I was thinking of you when it ended and hope you were the one who nabbed it!

Hi Aaron,

Great to hear from you again! I wish I could say that I was the winner of that pennant on ebay but I didn't even see the darn thing (not that I had any $$ left over from the other two :o , good thing I didn't see it).

Does anyone have a link to those pennants? Would have loved to see them.

I can't find them on E-Bay anymore, Greg -- they must have closed more than 30 days ago. Anyone know how to find E-Bay auctions closed more than 30 days ago?

At a minimum, if someone can remember the name of the seller, we should be able to find individual links in their feedback section.

I tracked down the name of the seller and you can still see some of the pennants he listed in his completed sales (others are in his feedback section).

Here's the nice Cubs pennant he sold:

Here's a nice Phillies pennant he sold:

He also sold a nice 1914 Braves pennant (which i don't remember him ending early, but for some reason I can't find) and that 1915 Red Sox pennant I mentioned to Greg.

Thanks Aaron.

As luck would have it, I actually found about the auction about three hours ago. It was purchased by my friend who just shot me an email. Very cool piece.

I just noticed ebay went with a generic "bidder 1, 2, 3" now instead of using someone's user name.

That really stinks. Sometimes I will intentially not bid on something if I see that a friend has bid on it already. I also see it as a good potential for some shill bidding to start occurring.

That and the fees going up. Somebody said it somewhere, ebay needs some competition out there.

Thanks again though for the links, greatly appreciated.

Ah ha! Did he happen to mention how much he paid for it??

Agree with your points on E-Bay. I like being able to track other collector's purchases (as well as my own). I don't understand what they are trying to prevent? And the potential for shilling would seem to be expanded exponentially as you point out. I don't get why E-Bay so often "fixes" things that don't need fixing.
