So I recently purchased this game used Fred Mcgriff Worth bat from ebay and was curious as to what others thought. The number on the end of the barrel and the number said "27" on the ebay description which would make this an Atlanta Braves gamer. Since I have got it in hand I am really undecided whether it is a "27" or a "29" which would be a Padres gamer. From what I have read, with the Padres Fred put the number and length on both sides of the bat but with the Braves he only put the number on the knob and sometimes the end of the barrel. This has length and jersey number on the bat knob and the end of the barrel has the number and the model number written in. So I am just curious if this was a bat he used with the Braves possibly soon after he was traded, or if it is just a "29" and a Padres bat. Any thoughts?

Looks like a Braves bat. Use on the back and left barrel is consistent with McGriff.
Nate has countless McGriffs, he could show the difference between Padres & Braves writting.

Thanks Nick.

That knob is absolutely dead on for his Worth bats. In my opinion, I think it's a Padres bat. Most, but not all, of his Padres days was used with a Worth. He then moved to the Braves with the Worths and transitioned back to the LS until the end of his career, with an occasional Rawlings. Again, 99% LS from Braves to end of career. From this time, he would write his number on both ends, sometimes in silver, sometimes in gold.

The C271 model was used 99% of his career. He started out with S2, tried the P89 and P72 early in his career. In '89 he had one order of R205's.

He literally had 40 bats ordered his whole career that were NOT C271's. I know that doesn't help you, but maybe helps someone else buying their next McGriff bat.

Well, there's your McGriff history lesson for the day. Now go clean your room! ;)

Thank you very much for your help. Are any of yours photomatched? Would love to photomatch this but definitely not as many pictures from back then and I don't think it has very many marks that stand out.

Nope, not photomatched. You'll probably have a tough time matching anything this old and this color of bat. Getty might have a few photos, but your best bet would be www.comc.com and zoom in on the front and backs of the cards.

Unless the bat has a specific white mark, you might not want to waste your time.
