MLB Jersey Tagging

I'm hoping somebody could explain to me the set tagging on GU MLB jerseys. I know each jersey has S1, S2, S3, etc, but I'm wondering if that has any significance other than just the order in which the jerseys were issued.

Majestic has used the S# ID for set numbers almost since they started producing MLB jerseys for the teams. The set numbers aren't automatically used in set number order in MLB, however. I recall a Cubs Convention several years back offering a Steiner Certified Cubs Opening Day home jersey of Derrek Lee which was a set 4.
