Hi,

If could use some help. I am interested in a game used 1997 Tony Gwynn jersey on ebay. My concern is that the jersey is size 52 ( with extra 2 in lengh) tag. Correct me if I am wrong but my understanding the that size 52 is a retail size jersey, and sizes 42,46,50 are considered team/player issued. If anybody has the time can you please explain this to me and give me your opinion on the jersey? It does not come with a COA.

Thanks

Thanks Phil,

Do you know if size 52 is considered retail and if so how did the Padres get it to Gwynn to wear. I though size 52 was retail only.

still here

I have seen plenty MLB players wear a size 52.

I know retail sizes are mostly S-M-L-XL-XXL

Mike0619, Tony never wore size 52. Only size 50 at the end of his career.
Hope this helps.

Also in regards to to jersey sizing I eas referring to this post below in regards to sizing of retail,vs authentic, vs player issued.

Here's MY PERSONAL Definitions (Talking Baseball - I can't address other sports)

GAME USED : Worn by the player while PARTICIPATING in a Game.

GAME WORN : Worn by player on the bench during a game but player never activated during the game.

GAME ISSUED : Made (by the Team) for a player who never ended up dressing out for the game or never got the expected 'Call Up' after the jersey was made. NEVER worn by the player.

EVENT WORN : Made (by the Team) for a player to wear during a photo op or Fan Event (such as a Fan Fest) but not worn or used during a game.

AUTHENTIC : I'm guessing a 'Pro Cut' would fall under this - Made exactly to player specs (same materials, extra lengths, etc) but made to sell at the Pro Shop, NOT made for the player.

RETAIL Authentic : Same Materials as 'AUTHENTIC', but NOT made to player specs. General basic sizing.

REPLICA : Made with correct colors and fonts, but lower grade materials, generally heat pressed logos, letters and numbers.

KNOCK OFF : Made with better materials than a 'REPLICA' (stitched on numbers, logos, etc) but looks like crap next to an AUTHENTIC.

That said, things to look for in baseball jerseys:

Tagging: since Majestic took over, tagging that starts with '00' is either AUTHENTIC or Made for the Team (GU, GW, EU/EW, GI). i.e. 0062. If it ends with '00' it is RETAIL. i.e. 6200. (This is a General Rule of Thumb and there may be exceptions on occasion).

Sizing: I can't speak for Wilson, Spalding, etc, but as far as Rawlings, Russell and Majestic are concerned, sizing tags can tell you a lot.

If a jersey is sized S, M, L, XL, XXL, XXXL, it is RETAIL.

If it is sized 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60 it may be AUTHENTIC or Used, but these are the Only sizes available for AUTHENTICS.

If it is sized 38, 42, 46, 50, 54, 58 (the 'in between' sizes) then the jersey was made for the team's use. These sizes are not available for RETAIL. At this point you would need to determine GU, GW, etc...

That said, like anything in life, there are exceptions to the rule.

As an example, in the early days of the Rockies, they took and sold many jerseys for Charity and such and sometimes a player would arrive and not have the Jersey of the Day available. The Rockies staff would then go to the Diamond Dry Goods, grab a jersey off the rack, have them customize t on the spot and bring it back down to the player.

This has been documented via the Rockies and early jerseys that have surfaced with LOAs from the Rockies.

I hope this helps.

I agree with most of this post but like I have said. I have seen plenty size 52 player worn jerseys.

3 authentication companies would say otherwise...

Troy Kinunen (MEARS) gives a size 52 an A5 grade:
Size 52 - Cert #306314 (you need to be a member to access online)

Lou Lampson (100% Authentic) authenticates a size 52:
Size 52 (http://www.100percentauthentic.com/Certificates/Details/1997-Tony-Gwynn-Game-Worn-Padres-Jersey-34882/34882)

BTW, welcome to the forum Whoman.

In my experience looking for a legitimate Tony Gwynn jersey, I have never seen a size 52 without something wrong with it.

Unable to access MEARS, two of the ones you have listed have flaws. Incorrect font used for "GWYNN". The "W" is wrong as well as the thickness.

Ditto for this one. The "W" is wrong as well as the thickness. Never once have I seen an Extra Length tag on a size 50.

The inconsistencies are subtle, but enough for doubt in my mind.

Thanks TwinLakes, however, I've navigated this site for almost a decade in a lurker mode.
I just want to say that from my experience handling over 100 Gwynn jerseys, I've never seen a size 52. Ever...Size 50 was the norm from around 1996. Like RC said and shows on a previous post, the differences of the "W" in Gwynn. And some of these third party companies make mistakes. We are not perfect.

Thanks for all the info everybody, it is much appreciated! I'm looking for a legit Gwynn jersey with signs of at least a little use. If anybody has one or comes a across one for sale please let me know. I see another one on eBay for $1500 size 50 but no signs of use. I think for the price, for that jersey, I'm going to pass but it at least has a COA and LOA.
