Forum readers-

I have been asked by several Forum readers to comment on an item currently being offered in the American Memorabila auction. It is listed as a 1997 Cal Ripken pre-game:

Anyone ever seen orange trim on a 1997 pre-game?
Ever seen orange trim on any O's pre-games from the 90's?

hello howard,

i'd be interested in the opinions of other members who are better versed with orioles jerseys than i am. however, here's my 2 cents:

all photos are from 1997. they seem to show the team wearing majestic bp jerseys. of course, there is no sleeve piping.

can anyone comment on when the orioles used russell bp jerseys?

the russell tag on the ami ripken bp was the first style they used in 1992. you can tell because it says "major league baseball" inside the logo. after 1992, the logo changed and no longer read "major league baseball". (a nice way of identifying the first year of russell jerseys). anyway, 5 yrs seems like a long time to hang on to a jersey.

i believe the orioles wore black russell bp tops in 1992. there was no sleeve piping on those either though.

i'm sure other members can elaborate further, but i seem to recall some orioles prototypes made up in the mid-late 90s with different versions of sleeve & neck piping. they were made but never worn. odd that the last ami auction also included a 1996 ripken jersey that lacked requisite sleeve piping. ( http://www.gameuseduniverse.com/vb_forum/showthread.php?t=5973 ). that one was also authenticated by lampson.

anyway, if the orioles bp tops in 1997 were made by majestic and did not include any patches, then what's this?:

forgot to mention... ami previously auctioned off another 1997 orioles bp top:

that one was made by rawlings. zany. still no sleeve piping though.

Rudy and Howard,

A friend just emailed me about this thread. A few years back, I submitted a Ripken BP to American Memorabilia (Howard knows the BP well because he thoroughly examined it). Lou Lampson authenticated it and attributed it to the wrong year (or someone else at AMI did as it was originally listed incorrectly). They did correct it after numerous emails and phone calls.

I would suggest seeing if Dave O'Brien (CollectGU) can help. He is very close with Victor and AMI and they may listen to him. Perhaps he will help out with getting this jersey removed - it would be the right thing to do.

Best,
Reid

Rudy:
To my knowledge, the Orioles have not year-tagged BP jerseys at the Major League level since (to pick an arbitrary starting point, based on jerseys I've actually seen or own) 1995. This includes the BP jerseys they altered and wore as gamers in 1998.

As to your mystery jersey...I've been trying to figure that one out for years. I got Eric Davis' version of that jersey from the O's DC Team Store during the brief time they were selling jerseys. I don't think it was a prototype, exactly, because I saw several different players jerseys like this. Mine's so crisp you could cut a steak with the tags...I don't think they were ever worn, but given the amount of effort that went into these (three patches, after all) they must have been given SERIOUS consideration. Three VERY odd things about this jersey:
No front number
Extremely tall "Orioles" script
Extremely short numbers on back.

It remains a mystery to me...I'm almost as baffled by it as the Orioles themselves are by the 1998 BP converts!

FYI,

I spoke with AMI and explained the problems that people have with the jersey. They listened and agreed to pull the jersey from the auction...

Regards,

Dave

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread and thanks to Dave for contacting AMI. It's great to see how these things can work for the benefit of the collecting community.

Sincerely,
Chris
