A few years back a large quantity of alleged 1984 Olympic jerseys entered the hobby via MEARS. To be perfectly clear, these were not worn by any member of the 1984 Olympic team. The provenance of where they came from is solid but the Olympic connection is not correct. I've been collecting Team USA for 20 years and have two actual 1984 red gamers in my collection.
ALL 1984 Olympic and pre-Olympic jerseys have name plates on the back. I have never seen a photo from that team that doesn't show a nameplate. The earliest photo in my collection is from the sixth game of the pre-Olympic tour and all members have name plates at that time. An actual Olympic worn jersey would also not include the GE sponsor patch on the sleeve. Advertising is prohibited under IOC By-law 50 which would have prohibited the GE patch.
Even in 1984 USA Baseball fielded more than one team so a quick look at the Jack McDowell card in the 2013 Panini USA Baseball Champions set will show the style of jersey in question where he was a member of the U18 team. They are great jerseys with fantastic eye appeal but they should be purchased knowing there is no Olympic connection.
