NFL identification tags question

Hello all, I'm new here. I've been looking for some answers to my questions about game used NFL jerseys and I think you guys can help. Anyways any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm an NFL fan and more importantly a Bengals fan. I picked up a game worn bengals jersey about 9 years ago. It is a Andrew Whitworth lineman jersey. It did not come with a cert or anything. As I was young and trustworthy. However at that time Andrew whitworth was not as well known as he is now. I got it for a good price. The tag on the neck line does not match up with his years. It is a tag for an 04 year. Do teams use jerseys that have years of past? The reason I would like to believe it is real is because it would be a lot of work to fake a jersey of somebody not well known at that time. I have pictures if that would help. Thanks for any help guys. Can't wait to get involved more in the comunity.

Sorry forgot to do this. He was a rookie in 06.

Don't let it worry you. Older jerseys can and do get issued to players in the NFL. A 2004 jersey worn by a player in 2006 isn't any major red flag, or even a minor one.

Thank you for the reply. That makes me feel better. Another question about this jersey. The arm holes seem to have been cut to allow for greater movement. Is this common? In my research I can't seem to find another jersey similar to it.

Players frequently customize their equipment to their liking. Everyone is different and certain players have quirks about how they like things.

And yes, players, even very high profile players, are frequently given jerseys that are tagged from several years prior.

Ryan is correct on this. Players have used both jerseys customized when issued and customized by them after they receive them. Again, no concerns to speak of.

Thanks for the replays! The picture I obtained off ghetty seems like it's the closest thing I can get to a photo matxh. But the yellow hit marks on shoulder pad area and the photo showing the shoulder pads sticking out as if the jersey was looser and ripped. I would love to get this photo blown up if anybody has ghetty access. I would like some other opinions. Thank you. This forum is very helpful and you guys are great!
