    Display cases and UV Protection

    Does anyone display their collection using curio-type display cases? I was curious what you have done to protect against UV-light as most of the displays I have seen contain glass that is not UV resistant. Any insight would be appreciated.

      I used a curio case once and it did fade a couple items, but I had the case in a bad location. Having low natural light for memorabilia is vital.

      I don't use the case any longer. I used a more open format now, in a basement with low light and like that much better. I do have a glass displa case with no UV protection for 4 game used gloves, but I went out of my way to make sure not a touch of daylight can reach it.

          That has always been a big issue for me, all the cases I saw offered no UV protection so I decided to make my own of sorts. I bought a book case from Gothic Furniture. They are hand made out of wood with choice of stain. I then had a sheet of UV filtering Acrylite cut to fit over the front. Its obviously not a true curio case since you are not able to view it from all side. The sheet for the front was about $150 so while I could have had the case built open on all side it would have been much more expensive.

                  In memorabilia rooms, you could have a UV film applied to your windows.

                      Not just your windows need to have the UV film applied but also your light source for the room. Fluorescent light bulbs give off UV light. You will need to make sure that if you have fluorescent lights to have them contained in a UV filtered case. As I am hoping to buy a new house in the next couple years I am making plans for a display room (ok the entire basement). The room will have all necessary lights and windows treated with some sort of UV blocking thus eliminating the need to have everything individually behind UV protection.

                      I do not know if any of those new fangled long life light bulbs give off UV light or not but that is something worth looking into also.
