Tyrus Thomas - Open Mouth...insert Foot

Tyrus has a Rookie salary this year of $3,260,760. Yeah, he needs the Benjamins!

Thomas slammed after saying contest about money

    Associated Press

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Bulls fined forward Tyrus Thomas $10,000 on Tuesday, one day after the rookie said he only was interested in the prize money at the NBA's slam dunk contest.

He later apologized "for any negative feelings that may have been caused by my comments."

The first Bulls player since Scottie Pippen in 1990 to participate in the event, Thomas was quoted in Tuesday's editions of the Chicago Tribune as saying: "I'm just going to go out there, get my check and call it a day."
When asked if being around some of the game's greats could be beneficial for a rookie, he responded, "I'm just into the free money. That's it. I'll just do whatever when I get out there."

The winner of the Feb. 17 event in Las Vegas gets $35,000. The runner-up earns $22,500, with the third and fourth-place finishers getting $16,125. Joining Thomas are defending champion Nate Robinson of New York, Orlando All-Star Dwight Howard and Boston's Gerald Green.

"This fine is an appropriate response to the remarks Tyrus made concerning his participation in the slam dunk contest," Bulls executive vice president of basketball operations John Paxson said in a statement. "It is a poor reflection on Tyrus individually and a poor reflection on the Bulls organization, and I am certainly disappointed."

Thomas apologized in a statement issued through his agents Tuesday night.

"I truly feel honored to be invited to participate in this year's slam dunk contest during next week's NBA All-Star Weekend in Las Vegas," Thomas said. "The opportunity to represent the Bulls and the city of Chicago on a global stage is a privilege that I do not take lightly. I regret the extent to which my comments indicate otherwise."

Thomas has appeared in 41 games, averaging 3.5 points and 2.7 rebounds.

The only way this dunk contest will offer any entertainment, is if they show a 30 minute highlight video featuring this year's judges (Michael Jordan, Vince Carter, Dominique Wilkens, Kobe Bryant, and Julius Erving).

With his new found fame and star status comes RESPONSIBILITY. Someone of his stature needs to speak to the public as the role model for the youth of our nation that he is. Is this the type of message we should be sending all of the kids aspiring to be an athlete today?

Well said! Go back to the days that when you were selected for an honor such as an All Star game you went and weren't compensated.

It used to be Olympic athletes would pay for their own training and get no financial perks and do this simply to represent their country.

I completely agree with you on this. Nowadays it's apparently all about the money and who cares if i ever win any championship rings or trophys, i just need those benjamins. Back in the 1980's (the best decade for basketball if u ask me) the Lakers had a fantastic rivalry with the Boston Celtics and i would bet that both teams would happily play for free just to beat the heck out of the other for a championship.

I couldn't disagree more!I know all you folks outside of Boston haven't seen much of Gerald Green but mark my words you'll know who he is after this competition. It won't even be close.I'm old enough to know what the contests were like in the 80's and 90's and i guarantee Green will put on a show worthy of Carter,Jordan,Dominique, and even the great Julius Erving. And he'll be the first to have done it since them.

Well, the dunk contest is now down to only four contestants. And one of them is only there to "get his check and call it a day." One of the remaining three is the defending champ, but he needed something like 14 tries to get his last dunk in last year. Dwight Howard is 6'11" - too tall. So yeah, I think I'd put my money on Green too...even though I have no clue who he is.

I like his Stats the Best...kinda says it all to me. 41 Games, averaging 3.5 Points, huh???
The NBA has the highest AVERAGE Salary (by far) of the "main 4" Pro Sports.
I`d bet he complains about the "grueling" schedule he has & all the Travel. This guy would have failed miserably, trying to play anytime prior to the 90`s.
Is this guy from Long Beach by any Chance???

How could anyone blame him for saying that. I'm just jealous I don't have the $$$ being offer to me. Every sport is big time money and for the most part the owners are big time spenders. If the owners can pay $3 million + for a guy who avg. 3-4pts a game it just show's how much money there making. Personally I would like to watch Dr.J,Jordan,Wilkens have a old timers slam dunk contest!
