Does anyone have any insight or thoughts on the authenticity of the Al Leiter Mets jersey in the Huggins & Scott auction? It's lot number 1128.

Thanks.

Regards,
Bill

Description
Offered is a superb 2002 NY Mets Al Leiter game-worn jersey signed in silver marker on the reverse. Leiter is a two-time All-Star and was a fan favorite for his team no matter where he pitched. Presented is a black knit game-worn button-down away jersey lettered ”Mets” across the chest with Leiter’s ”22” appearing on both the left breast and reverse. ”Leiter” is lettered across the shoulders on the back of this artifact just north of his number. All letters and numbers are tri-colored with blue and white lettering against an orange background. The jersey shows moderate signs of game usage and is in fantastic condition. A simple Rawlings Size 50” tag is stitched on the inner lower left portion of the front of the jersey. The MLB logo patch is sewn into the neck portion of the back and the left shoulder has the Mets logo on the left sleeve. Leiter signed (“8”) this jersey on the reverse between his name and numbers with his number added. COA from James Spence Authentications.

This jersey is missing the 40th Anniversary patch and 9-11-01 embroidery which were worn on all 2002 Met jerseys. The simple rawlings 50 tag does not sound correct as flag tags with year and set were used in 2002 attached under the RAWLINGS tag. Unfortunately the auction does not show a photo of the tagging on this jersey.

I will send an inquiry to Huggins and Scott asking them why they think this is a 2002 jersey and more info on the simple Rawlings size 50 tag.

Not commenting on the jersey itself, as I have minimal expertise in this area compared to many others on this board, I can comment that Huggins & Scott is considered a reputable and honest sports & americana memorabilia auction house. The co-owner has been as a well known Washington DC area baseball card dealer since before I started collecting cards as as a kid.

I agree with David on Huggins&Scott reputation. I have sold directly to them before and this time consigned a few game used items (not the Leiter jersey) and sold them some game used items in this auction.

They have specialized in cards and just building up the game used business.

I would suggest emailing bill@hugginsandscott.com as I am sure he can help.

Most of the items I sent in had either a Taube LOA or Mears A10 rating on the jerseys. I noticed the Leiter didn't have any authentication and was missing the 2002 patch, but maybe they were removed. Definitely worth emailing them.

Good luck. Andrew
