Forum Readers-

I was asked about the following jacket:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Mike-Schmidt-HOF-1989-game-worn-dugout-jacket-LOA_W0QQitemZ330093530177QQihZ014QQcategoryZ60597Q QrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It is described as a 1989 Phillies Mike Schmidt jacket. Where does one begin to try to determine how Lampson or anyone could write a LOA on this?:

1. Phillies did not wear this style in 1989 with the players name on back
2. Phillies NEVER wore this style made by Rawlings during any season
with the players name on back in this style.
3. Phillies wore a similar Starter brand unlined style in 1989, not Rawlings
brand.
4. The Phillies did wear unlined Rawlings jackets during the 1987/1988
seasons, however, they were made of a knit material (not
satin) with ribbed elastic cuffs/waistband and collar. Likewise, the
names on back were on a plate and in a different style white tackle
twill material.

The LOA is from Lou Lampson/100% Authentic. I tried to find a copy of it onthe 100% Authentic site (http://www.100percentauthentic) however, can't locate one. Can anyone locate a copy as shown in the Ebay listing and post it here?

I'd be curious to learn what type of information Lampson used to determine the "authenticity" of this jacket? Can a similar jacket from 1989 be produced from a common player? How about a photo from Getty or similar photo service? A photo from a Phillies publication? Baseball card?

Should a fellow Forum reader have any evidence that this type of jacket was ever used by Schmidt, or for that matter, the Phillies in 1989, by all means please contact me or post it here. Quite possibly you can also locate a photo of Ripken wearing the amazingly rare green St. Patrick's jersey that Lamspon also wrote a LOA on.

Howard-

Truly amazing! Has anyone ever seen a 'year/set' tag on a jacket??

As an aside, I did pick up that Ripken helmet we discussed briefly last week. I'll post pics if you like when I get it.

I am growing tired of other sellers not caring the slightest about the items they are selling and simply hiding behind an LOA. If so, perhaps they should rename this document to a "CYA."

Furthermore, "I'm not big into the history of jerseys" is kind of laughable.

Can you imagine going into a local store...let's say... a computer shop...

Buyer -- Hi, I am interested in this computer. Can you please tell me if it contains an Intel or AMD processor? Can you also tell me how much RAM it contains, and the size of the hard drive?

Sales Assistant -- I'm sorry, but I have no answers to your questions. I'm not big with computers. Perhaps you should call Dell.

I am tired of seeing items on ebay touting what a great authenticator Lou is.

Current examples include:

This comes with a letter of authenticity from Lou Lampson (100percentauthentic.com), who is considered a foremost authority and analyst in the field and has more than 30 years of expertise in authentication.

With this jersey comes a COA from Lou Lampson! He has over 30 years experience in collecting, authenticating and appraising game used uniforms and related equipment. He's considered one of the best authenticators in the world.

Lou Lampson is considered by collectors, ex-athletes, and equipment managers, alike as a foremost authority and analyst in the field. He has authenticated for the National Sports Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, The College Football HOF, Texas Sports HOF, Upper Deck Authenticated and the hobby's major auction houses. Lou has over thirty years' experience in collecting, authenticating and appraising game used uniforms and related equipment. He owns an extensive game used collection covering all four major sports, including numerous, unique, "Perfect 10" representations and has an astonishing 8,000 plus uniform-related photos in his reference library.

"... and has an astonishing 8,000 plus uniform-related photos in his reference library."

It's a shame Lampson doesn't look for photos of items he actually authenticates.
