Hello forum members.

Interesting item in the new american memorabilia auction. it's a 1987 game used reggie jackson jersey which has tags that say set 1 1987 and 2 87 (representing set 2 87)

It's mentioned very clearly in the item description by the way. Has anyone seen something like this before?

Eric-
I'll do you one better. Same auction has my Holy Grail with many, many questions to be answered(I've e-mailed the auction with these questions with no response as of yet). Rudy also weighed in,in pointing out:94 flag tag on '95 style label. The Camp Bradenton (fantasy camp) was started in '99 why a '94 jersey? Was it "instructor" Van Slyke(game used?) or a camper with his favorite player on the back? In '94,'95 the Pirates didn't wear their names on the back. This style jersey was worn from '91-'96,a little unusual for a camp started in 1999. Plus other issues.

eric: while this may not be entirely helpful, i can say that i've seen that specific sort of tagging conflict before on a late 80s athletics jersey. it may have been a mickey tettleton. i've no explanation for its occurance.

re: the ami van slyke jersey.
this may go down as one of lou's top 5 most inept authentications and that's really saying something. first, here's the original ebay auction for it: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270077461029
nowhere in the original auction did it state game-used or game-issued. it was simply sold as an andy van slyke authentic jersey. that said, the ami auction doesn't list a year for this jersey and there's absolutely no description for it. apparently lou was as confused and speechless as i was about it. it didn't stop him from authenticating it as an "andy van slyke game worn jersey". vic, here's the sort of garbage your man is submitting and charging you for:

the jersey is tagged as a 1994 (on a 1995/96-style tag). 1994 was the last year van slyke played for the pirates. this particular style was worn from 1991-1996. according to this then, van slyke was supposed to have worn this jersey solely in 1994. (van slyke played for the orioles and phillies in 1995 and then retired after the 1995 season and never played again).

in 1994, the pirates did not wear names on the back. as well, their jerseys bore the 1994 all-star game patch which they hosted that year.

the jersey wasn't prematurely made up for the 1995 season because, again, they didn't wear names on the back in 1995. also, it's missing the "pirate fans" patch which was worn in 1995.

any way you slice it, the jersey makes absolutely no sense. then there's the "camp bradenton" patch. spring training perhaps? unlikely as the pirates wore their bp jerseys in spring training 1994 and i'm unaware of any "camp bradenton" patch. robert indicates he feels it's likely a fantasy camp patch and possibly from 1999. does a 1999 fantasy camp shirt qualify these days as a "game worn jersey"? to be honest, i'm not even sure it's a 1999 fantasy camp jersey because the pirates stopped using this style in 1996. at best, it's a questionable fantasy camp jersey. at worst, it's a nonsensical, frankenstein jersey that can't be attributed to any year that van slyke played for the pirates;

victor, that's the sort of garbage that you're paying lou for. you may as well flush your money down the toilet. it'd certainly be more entertaining wouldn't it? after all, even though they both took your money for doing nothing, at least the toilet won't brag about how it's a "foremost expert".

Eric-
Too bad the same can't be said about this jersey:

An entire thread was devoted to it, with a fellow Forum reader (and Cubs expert) raising questions about it.

eric,

re: the 2003 duncan jersey.

the ebay jersey and the ami jersey are the same.

http://img103.imageshack.us/img103/2360/dunczz1.jpg

- there's a single loose thread on the "2" in the exact same location on both jerseys

- the autographs themselves are identical

- the position of both autographs is identical; layering one on top of the other results in a perfect match.

i'm curious what the spurs letter in the ebay auction stated. it seems the seller didn't know whether it was used or issued. the letter must've said something.

anyway, the autograph on the ami jersey is slightly lighter than the ebay jersey. as well, the tag is slightly more puckered. i believe someone ran it through the wash a few times. running it through wash doesn't really make sense because you'd fade the autograph (as has occurred) and obviously the assumption is that duncan didn't wear it after he signed so a faded autograph would seem odd.

at any rate, given the loose thread and the perfect autograph matches, there's no chance that it isn't the same jersey.

AMI has told me they are looking into the Duncan and the Vince Carter jerseys...

Updates as soon as I can get 'em.

The Forum and some of its members should get part of that authentication fee.

Its great that AMI moves quickly on removing questionable items, but a shame these pieces can get a LOA and appear on the auction in the first place.

I normally don't chime in on these "Lou Threads", but in this case I couldn't have said it better myself.

It's great that with the research that was done by our members the items were pulled, but WHY or better yet HOW do these items get in the auctions?

Someone needs to send in an iffy offering....you know, something with about 3 serious red flags. Document everything. Maybe a little home video with some narration. A poor man's 60 Minutes. Then when that item shows up for auction, post the little "documentary" on You Tube. If a picture's worth a thousand words, what would a short video clip be worth?

it seems the van slyke, vince carter olympic jersey, and tim duncan jersey have all been pulled.

i don't understand why there wasn't the typical, extended process of relaying the concerns to lou, having him defend his work, and then having the auction house stand by lou. a little work on dave o'briens end and the items are gone asap. i was looking forward to a predictable yet amusing explanation from lou on how he has photos of van slyke on the field in 1994 as the only pirate with a name on his back.

at any rate, all's well that ends well; we did the work, buyers were saved from bad jerseys, lou got paid anyway. a thank you from victor would be nice but i don't want to push it. knowing that lou's probably off enjoying a mai tai for all of his hard work is enough reward for me.
