    Bone Rubbed?

What Was The Purpose Of Bone Rubbing A Bat? I Have Seen Ted Williams Do It. I Heard It In The Movie "the Natural". What Kind Of Bone Is Used And Can That Still Be Done Today?

    Re: Bone Rubbed?

    Did someone call my name?

It was/is done to compress the grain on the bat to make it more dense, therefore a harder hitting surface. I would guess very few players today still use a cow femur or jaw bone. I have heard of guys using bottles or even other bats for the process. Bone-rubbing is usually for the softer woods such as ash. Maple bats are a very tough wood and do not require boning.

And the reason for that is...

The propulsion of a hit baseball is determined by bat speed and bat density at the point of impact. A more porous bat surface creates softer impact, as well as a higher risk of breaking.

From what I heard in an interview with Bobby Murcer that he was big on bone rubbing his bats
