View Full Version : O'Neill Tagging Grey Flannel?

Hello everyone

I was looking at the 1997 Paul O'Neill game used jersey in the current Grey Flannel auction. I noticed the lettering on the tag reading O'Neill 97 was different than the ones in my collection. Notice the spacing, and things like the font of the letter "I"

Is this common?

Eric-
I had a 1998 O'Neill and have also sold several other Yankees pants/jerseys from this time frame. The style of I on your 2 shirts match my I's perfectly. I've never seen the screening on an O'Neill or other I's in the same fashion as the Grey Flannel version.

Below is a photo from a common pair of 1997 Yankees home pants-it too has the "familiar" style I with the top and bottom lines.

after quickly perusing some photos, here are some cursory observations:

- russell began using these paper/computer ink-printed tags on mlb jerseys in 1994. in 1992 and 1993, they used cloth tags with "plastic" text.

- although the specific format of what was printed on the tags varied according to the team, the fonts used on the tags were identical. for the most part, the letters were sans-serif except for the "i" which had a serif.

- they seemed to use the same font from 1994-1998. in 1999, they began using a new font.

this gfc o'neill font isn't quite the 94-98 font nor the 99+ font. i'd appreciate any insight into fonts on russell tags from others.

The other 97's have the 97 below the name rather than on the same line.

more russell paper tags:

it seems that a change occurred in 1999 to a smoother, less blocky font.

makes me wonder about this little gem; a "2000 griffey" from gfc (note the 1999 reds tag shown above):

The tagging on my 1997 O'Neill is exactly the same as shown on the Grey Flannel jersey. Not sure if that's good news or not now.

Norman-
What's the source of your jersey? Can you post a pic of the tagging?

Russell is not too consistant with font styles, Kingjammy posted a pic of a Curtis 1998 jersey with what looks to be a Steiner sticker and the "I" has a serif. I have a Rivera from 1998 also from Steiner and it is like the "I" in question, no serif. Since both come from Steiner I would have to say Russell used both fonts in their tagging with no consistancy.

Here is the photo of the tagging on Norman's O'Neill jersey. Can anyone provide an opinion?

Norman-

Your jersey appears to be a different font than the one in grey flannel. Not sure what that means, actually.

George,
Yes, Russell was never consistent with their font styles. To discard a jersey because of a font in one letter on the tagging makes no sense. Many collectors live and die by the tagging and are not ready to believe that slight deviations in some fonts do not mean that a jersey is not authentic. Look at other factors in the jersey. I'm sure your Rivera is probably a great piece where authenticity is not a question. Enjoy it.
