    Question about MLB auctions

MLB is currently offering one of Lou Whitaker's old Tigers helmets.

Ignoring MLB's apparent confusion over whether or not it's actually a "batting helmet" I was under the impression that, with the exception of Steiner to a degree, every g/u item MLB sells comes directly from the teams. Has anyone seen them sell something this old before? The description would indicate that's from 1990, although the presence of the MLB logo on the back would put it to 1992 at the earliest.

It was my understanding that the majority of Tigers helmets from this era were sold to Howard Wolf...or to at least someone. It's just odd that the Tigers would supply this to MLB 12+ years after Whitaker retired. And it's pretty unlikely that it sat undiscovered in the equipment for that long, given that Tiger Stadium's been closed for the past 7+ years.

    Any thoughts on this?
