Neat? Ouch! This isn't good. That bat probably did and/or will make it on the market as a GAME USED Manny Ramirez Game Used bat. Yes, the bat will show game use, but not by Manny.

This is pretty scary!

How about Manny Ramirez wearing No. 95 (instead of his regular No. 24) against the Yankees in a Spring Training game in Tampa because his uniform was left at home.

For this reason, whenever I see a Red Sox jersey that is properly tagged but I cannot find who wore a particular number, I do not ever assume that the jersey isn't game worn/used.

No photos to post, but a couple of funny stories.

I had several of Jay Bell's bats, both DBacks and Pirates, for him to sign a few years back, and one of the Pirates bats had '18' written on the knob and barrel end. I asked Jay why, as I knew he'd always worn either '3' or '33', and he said, "Van Slyke". "Andy Van Slyke?" "Yeah. He used to take my bats and put his number on them." If the opportunity ever presents itself, I'd like to get Van Slyke to sign the bat, too.

I picked up a bat from a clubhouse guy down in Tucson, at the DBacks' ST facility a few years ago. Tony Womack had borrowed the team's then-First Base coach's fungo bat for bp, and had put a small crack in it, right on the label, and then returned it. So the coach took a black sharpie, and inscribed the bat, "To Tony Dickhead. Happy Fungo Hitting! Robin Yount". It's a nice sig, too, and definitely a unique inscription.

I bought a Brady Anderson game-used bat several years ago. A year or so ago, I went to a signing to have him autograph it. He held it up, looked at the bat marks, and said "Someone must have borrowed this...the ball marks look like someone who's right-handed was using it." I'm still not sure if he was jerking me around. But if someone else DID use it, I'll just assume it was Ripken.

Prince has been using Joe Dillion's bats lately too. He used to use Carlos Lee's bats also.

Prince has used everybody's bat at one time or another. I don't think he even looks before he leaves the dugout...just grabs which ever bat is closest.

Here are some examples of sharing among the game's elite: Rickey Henderson and Don Mattingly used to use each other's bats. Also, AROD used a bunch of Griffey's bats when he was coming up with the Mariners. Steve Carlton was known to lend and borrow bats with other Phillies. There have been two Carlton/Schmidt gamers on the market in the last year or two. Also, here is a photo of Carlton using a Garry Maddox bat in BP:

On another note, is that a Diablo Manny has been using this year? Either The Odd Bat Fairy must have visited the red sox, or they ran out of sticks on the 2 week 3 country road trip.

There are a lot of players the commonly use other players/teamates equipment.

As I pointed out on this forum in another thread many players from the Yankees at some point or another have used Posadas bats.
Alex Rodriguez was known for using Posadas bats & Wristbands during his slump
Orlando El Duke Hernandez told me himself that he used Posadas bats
Tino Martinez Used Posadas bats
Shane Spencer told me he would used Posadas bats
Enrique Wilson Used Posadas bats
Alex Rodriguez has been known to use Jeter bats

Tino Martinez and Luis Sojo would constantly use each others bats

Vlad Guerrerro if I remember correctly was being handed David Ortiz bats by Ortiz for the 2006 or 2007 All Star game Home Run Derby

David Wells while with the Yankees used Ricky Ledees bats

Johnny Damon has used Giambis bats

Jason Giamibi has used Bubba Crosby bats

Enrique Wilson also while with the Yankees would basically use any bat he could get his hand on

I remember there was a photomatch one time on this forum of Pujols using a Tino Martinez bat

When Bobby Abreu first came to the Yankees he hadn't recived his bats yet so for his first week or so at bats he used Posadas bats

Jose Molina of the Yankees used Miguel Cairos bats

I purchased this bat from Jim Tucker. Jim and his wife have worked and boarded several Angels over the years. In 1999, Ramon Ortiz lived with the Tuckers and gave this bat to Jim. Todd Greene left the Angels after the 1998 season. A box of Todd Greene's bats were left behind and Troy Glaus (#25 in 1999) took these bats to use during batting practice in 1999.

When Sammy Sosa hit his 600th home run last year he was using on of Kenny Lofton's Old Hickory bats. It was surprising to me that when a player was about to hit a milestone home run that he was not using his own signature bat. The day before when he was still at 599 Sosa had used one of his own Rawlings bats. Then he used Lofton's bat the next day and hit number 600. The Rangers have an exhibit in their museum of items from the 600 home run at bat and the Old Hickory with Lofton's name on the barrel looks very odd there.

I've had this post in my to-do list for a while now...

Mike Cameron tied the all-time record with 4 HRs in a game. For that game, he was using an Edgar Martinez model Rawlings Big Stick. An article I read had Mike saying that Edgar and the superstars get the best cuts of wood. Attatched is a picture of the bat on display in Cooperstown. Just picked up a Dave Winfield cooper DW20 gamer from his last year with the Indians, and to my delight there was a 24(Manny Ramierez) on the knob. Manny got one of Winfields clubs and used it a couple of times and didnt care for it so he gave it up and it has now landed in my collection. A 500 HR hitter using a 3000 hitters bat, thought that was cool. I'll try to post a pic later, but has anyone got a shot of Manny in 95 with a two-toned cooper? Jeff

Kyle -

I know that Clint Barmes has used Pitcher's bats... in fact, when I saw him at Spring Training, we were talking about the fact I noticed he was using one of Kip Wells old bats that was left behind after he left the Rox.

While doing the 'Making the Game' stint for Rawlings, I made Clint a custom Maple Bat (he can't use it in games because I'm not 'certified' - but he has used it in BP) and he told me then he likes a 33' Bat made as light as possible.

All the best -

I don't have much to contribute but I suppose I can share my experience at a Mobile BayBears batboy during their first season. Figuring out who was using what bat was actually pretty tricky. Some of them did put their number on in sharpie but even then that could be misleading. The only way I could keep up with who was using what bat was just to mentally note who just batted and place the bat in their slot on the rack. The players did occasionally get custom made bats from friends of relatives (I remember Giambi's bat floating around for example) but as far as I can recall none of the minor leaguers had custom made bats. I think custom made bats were a bit sought after though and I recall overhearing some conversations about getting them. One bat I had (but didn't keep...) was a broke Mike Cameron bat. It was given to me by a Birmingham Barons player (can't recall who) and he told me at the time to hang on to it because Cameron was going to be good (fairly accurate statement). I wonder how many items like that have made it into the market as authentic? I mean these were not even MLB used bats but how is one to know?

On another note, I recall my boss having us sell broke bats in front of the stadium for 5 bucks. They sold fairly well but I remember the confusion when it came to pitchers in particulary. Do you have a Matt Clement? Uhhh I think this one was his. More items going into collections with possibly faulty info...

Here is Billy Butler... I noticed this while watching a couple of games, but I never could figure out whose bat it was. My DVR wasn't working and I couldnt rewind and pause or I was at the game and too far away. That said, this is the only bat I've seen Billy use with a non-natural finish since 2005 or so. It could be his, but I've not seen a personal model bat for Billy that was not all natural finish, since the minors. And I've not seen him use a Marucci bat aside from this one. He's pretty exclusive toward Phoenix Bats.

Anybody know anything more? These appear to be April 25, April 10, April 27 and May 26.

Not a hint of photo evidence but just today I received a 2002 Marlins bat from Left Field Collectibles, GU by Alex Gonzalez, including an Expos signed letter from the visiting equipment manager.

On knob and end in silver are Gonzalez's #11. In gold, on the knob, the 11 is blocked out and the number 17 was added. Checking Baseball Reference the player who wore #17 in 2002 for the Marlins was Ramon Castro.

The bat has a clean crack which I plan to repair. Beautiful 2 tone bat, black and rose. Could well have been cracked by Castro.

You can add a whole new dimension to this thread by considering the jerseys that were recycled from a given season to the next year's spring training. One example to start: 1981 Cubs home and road #23 Jim Tracy, size 42 at the time. Leave the home intact, change the NOB on the back of the road, and the results are Ryne Sandberg's first Cubs jerseys (1982 ST). Sandberg can be seen wearing the road jersey on his 1983 Fleer and Donruss cards.

He has been slumping bad, I bet that's why he wants to go back to his regular bats.

BMH did he order the usual model or is he trying something different?

The bat Posada has been using is absolutely disgusting.

When you can say an item is disgusting, thats when its at it most beautiful point lol lol:D

And no one is as disgusting with his bats and helmets as Posada.

He uses so much pintar on his bats and uses the bats till they break and so much pine tar tranfers from his hand to the helmet that it starts to cover the team logo. You go to love it.

Posada / Yankee fan or not you got to have one of his bats in your collection.

I have a posada from steiner, that cracked early on so it's not as hammered, but Im jealous of that Mizuno that has been on the photo match thread, such a sick and awesome bat.

2009 Billy Butler using a Mike Jacobs two-tone Marucci bat. Recently acquired this bat below. Looks like I could possibly get to a photomatch, but will probably require a MLB.TV search. It has Billy's #16 on the knob, but I need a solid photo match to be really comfortable that this was definitely used by Billy.

Sorry for this bad pic, I have not had a chance to take my own yet. I'll replace this soon.

If you ever see a photo of Duke Snider in a #28 SF Giants flannels, it's an adopted jersey (not one made for him). Number 4 Giants flannels were made for Snider, but not worn, as the number, while not officially retired yet, was put aside in deference to Mel Ott. Snider has said that he tried on jerseys in the Giants clubhouse that were given to him by the equipment guy, and he settled on the #28 jerseys that were issued to, but not worn by, pitcher John Pregenzer.

Hey guys,
Looking for some help on this situation - it has me stumped. I'm looking into buying a Carlos Quentin GU bat that's MLB authenticated. When I typed in the authentication #, it shows that it is a Carlos Quentin bat used by Jose Lopez of the Rockies in April of this year. My question is, how would this Quentin bat get in the possession of Lopez? I know that it's common for players to use their teammates' bats, but these 2 have never been on the same team. I found a picture of Quentin using the same style bat in 2010, and then a picture of the bat being used by Lopez in 2011. Any chance it's the same one? Any insight is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
Chris

lol :D actually the Braves have been more consistent with using their own bats this year. I just take so many photos that I see every bat that every player uses in every game so I catch a lot of guys who will switch bats for even 1 at-bat. With the Braves, this year it's just the players you usually don't hear about often that will share bats. Most of starting lineup is sticking with their own bats now.

Thanks guys!

I'm indeed using my Nikkor AF-S 300mm f/2.8 lens. I only put on my teleconverter for just a little while each game. It gives me a much better focal length (it turns the lens into a 510mm f/4.8) but it downgrades the sharpness just a tiny bit. It's best used for close-up infield/outfield shots.

The settings are almost different for most of my shots. In the daytime, I always go for the fastest shutter speed, which in my camera is 1/8000th of a second. I keep my aperture wide open (without my teleconverter, I leave it at f/2.8 the whole time, and with the teleconverter it's f/4.8 and I leave that wide open too).

During night games, I have my settings saved at 300mm, f/2.8, 1/2000 shutter, ISO 2500. I always try to get the best color for my images, and for that I actually guess the color temperature in Kelvin. Most cameras let you manually set the color temperature. For day & night games the temperature is usually around 5500-6500. I'll usually just take a picture at each different temperature in that range until I find what color matches what I'm looking at. Understanding white balance can dramatically change the appearance of your photos. I've learned a lot about that this year. The color in my images are much more on-point than in previous years.

I take pictures at every single home series and I'll take usually 500-700 images per game. The more you go out and shoot, whether you're professional or not, the more you'll learn on your own. That's how I helped myself understand the settings more. You just have to practice, practice, practice, because photography isn't simple at all. It's one of the most complicated hobbies out there (it's actually rated as one of the world's most stressful jobs too), but as long as you practice and read up on new things all the time, then you can have some great work come from it.

I've noticed that often when a player is injured fairly early in the season and is done for the year, his bats seem to go up for grabs. One year I recall Danny Bautista had a serious shoulder injury and lost the whole last half of the season, and it seemed like everybody was swinging one of his bats, which I could tell a mile off from the distinctive tape job; I even saw Randy Johnson take one to the plate a few times. Last year, it was the same with Stephen Drew; I even saw one of Drew's bats in prospect Wagner Mateo's bag during the Arizona Summer League.
