    1992 George Brett Jersey

Pictured below is a George Brett jersey currently being offered on ebay as a "game worn, 100% origianl and unaltered" jersey from the 1992 season:

I've owned a 1992 home Brett jersey, and it matches this photo from Getty EXACTLY:

Although the Ebay description indicates it's 100% original and unaltered, there a some major differences as to the one I owned and also the one from Getty:

    Specifically:
    1. No memorial sleeve patch on the Ebay jersey for the death of Royals president Joe Burke. He died early in the season, May 12th.

    2. Vertical arch name. Not the same as the one I had or referenced in Getty or the jersey I owned.

    3. Number style-note the completely different style of 5. My shirt matched the Getty exactly.

    4. Tagging. My shirt, and 2 other 1992 Royals jerseys I have owned, had the Russell tag in the tail, and also the Intera tag sewn below it. The Ebay shirt has collar tagging as oppoed to the traditional tail tagging.

I'm interested in learning if any other Royals collectos have a 1992 home Brett they can post here, or comment on the above. I have a customer seeking an all original Royals Brett, however, need answers to my questions above before considering such a purchase.

    Thanks.

Also notice the completely different fonts on the name on back, especially the R.

Can someone possibly find a photo of Brett in the same style font shirt as the one on Ebay?

        Thanks.

          Re: 1992 George Brett Jersey

the lampson letter on the jersey, which was just sold at the last vintage authentics auction for $947.05 (with BP), states:

"..the jersey would have to have been sourced prior to may 15 with no JRB memorial present. also the NOB is inconsistent as to style and font which was horizontally dominant on most brett gamers of this time period but is possible".

for me, the biggest problem is the neck tag. the nob, lack of a patch, lack of a poly tag (although this jersey is apparently made from nylon so i guess there wouldn't be a poly tag) are a concern but technically possible (albeit unlikely). on the other hand, i've never seen a legit russell gamer from that era with a neck tag. has anyone?

on the other hand, russell retail jerseys from this era had this exact style of neck tagging and were made from nylon. (most of the pro jerseys were polyester). see below.

although he notes the problems with the nob, lampson completely fails to mention the biggest red flag, the collar tag. to say this jersey is "100% properly tagged" is 100% incorrect. when you add up the incorrect nob, lack of a patch, nylon/lack of a poly tag, and collar tag, this jersey shares more in common with a doctored retail jersey than a brett gamer.

            Howard,
Some hopefully helpful pictures from my trip to George Brett's restaurant in KC. My Holy Grail, his 3,000 hit jersey from 1992

tail tag, notice the "5 BRETT"

                Michael-
I'm extremely surprised to see the collar tag, however, I'll make note of it.

The tag in the tail is exactly the same as the home 1992 I once had, and likewise, other 1992 Royals I've seen for sale. It not only has the first line with year/set, it has the additional line with the player's uniform # and name. With this said, the shirt on Ebay still has several elemensts that I'd like an experienced Brett or Royals collector to possibly comment on, especially when compared to the Getty photo:

                1. Completely different number font.
2 Completely different letter font for the N.O.B., especially the R.
                3. Positioning of the 5 and N.O.B. (Ebay shirt is much higher).
                4. Lack of memorial sleeve patch, or any reference to an outline from
                thispatch.
                5. Tagging in tail-void of Brett's uniform # and name.

Again, any help or insight to the above is greatly appreciated.

Is It the photo or is that bat really that old looking. To me it looks like it's from the 30's. Not from 1992. Sorry for changing the subject.

Grey Flannel auction has a "1992 game worn Brett" however, no memorial patch or mention of it missing on the sleeve. Likewise, the name on back does not appear to be consistent with photos found on Getty or similar sites:

George Brett 1992 Home jersey, with his modified "JRB" patch to "JHB." I don't believe that the jersey shown here is the same that is being auctioned off as there appears to be more space on the pictured jersey here between the Russell "R" and the sleeve cuff than on the Grey Flannel jersey (no way to tell for sure, just how my eye sees it). Also, the absence of the patch as stated previously

Also, the button placement of the button under the "y" of Royals appears in the picture below to be at the base of the hyperbola of the whereas in the jersey being auctioned off it appears to be to the right (jersey's left) of it. This could be due to the angulation/change in tension of jersey I guess, just stating what I see.

                          one other observation...
The space between the top segment of the "5" on the front of the jersey, appears to be about the same thickness in a head-toe dimension as the white area below it on the picture of George. On the jersey being auctioned off, the top segment of the "5" seems significantly larger than the white space directly beneath it. Doesn't mean that it's not a legit jersey, but it doesn't appear to me to be the one in the picture. People please tell me if you think what I am saying is crazy.
                          thanks

looks like someone had that made at a retail location. look at the outline around the 5 and brett. that outline is typical of ironing tables used to press letters and numbers at sports pro shops or embroidery shops. they usually don't carry correct font lettering and numbers.
