Bat pine tar question

If the pine tar is freshly sticky on a bat your bat does that mean it was used recently? Or does the pine tar remain sticky for a few months?? Im tryting to narrow down a photomatch for my Pedroia bat?? Thanks

It can remain sticky for a long time, I have a Bagwell bat from 2005 that is still sticky to the touch.
