Pujols 3B glove on American Mem.

AMI has a great looking 2002 Pujols 3rd basemen glove up on their current auction.

Here is Rob Steinmetz's posting on Albert's 2002 gloves: Pujols played primarily OF in 2002, but also spent some time at 3B and 1B (and even a few innings at SS!). As a result, a few different glove types exist. Pujols used both black and dark tan Nike gloves in 2001, with his name embroidered in yellow on the thumb of each glove. Beware of Nike gloves that show excessive use and have strange initials hand-written on the inside or outside of the glove. It is known that Pujols gifted many unused Nike gloves to relatives in the Dominican Republic, who used the gloves and later sold them in the United States as Albert's gamers.

Here is the auction description....the young St. Louis Cardinals phenom wore this absolutely stunning Pro Gold 1100 black Nike glove at third base until the 2003 season. Mainly known for his hitting, the Red Bird's phenom put definitive use on this beauty that features his name embroidered in red thread. An 11" gamer, this "Nike" mitt sports the proper single-post T-Bar webbing and was customized specifically for Pujols. The only question now is what belongs in Cooperstown quicker, Pujols or this ultra-scarce piece. This glove can be sourced directly to a Pujols family member.

Everyone respects Denny on this forum so hopefully there is more insight we can get here. It is stated as a 2002 Nike but it clearly has red lettering and Rob's states it should have yellow lettering. Then there is this statement (It is known that Pujols gifted many unused Nike gloves to relatives in the Dominican Republic, who used the gloves and later sold them in the United States as Albert's gamers) which is scary considering the glove opens at $900 + the buyers premium so it is a $1,000+ investment.

I called Tony at AMI and he said Denny will sign the LOA confirming the auction description which states "2002 Pujols Game Used 3B glove". I would like to bid but want to be cautious.

Pujols Glove Clarification

November 11 2005, 6:37 PM
This glove originally appeared on eBay a few months ago, posted by someone who claimed to have obtained the glove from a Pujols family member. The person who negotiated a deal for the glove off eBay contacted me, and I was put in touch with the original eBay seller. After speaking with him at length about this glove and his family connections, I have every reason to believe his story is 100% accurate.

Nike gloves with red embroidery were used by Albert in 2003. Please note that the auction description's reference to "....until the 2003 season". I'm not sure how the year 2002 got into the title, but this is definitely a 2003 glove. Denny and I also spoke about this glove, and he was well aware of the fact that Pujols gloves with red embroidery were used in 2003 (even before I mentioned it to him).

In short, don't let the "2002" mention in the auction title scare you off. This glove exhibits proper Major League use (not overly abused like most of the gloves abused in the Dominican Republic and shipped back to the United States as "game used"). I have a pretty extensive Pujols collection, and I wouldn't hesitate to bid on this one for myself. Nice piece!

Best,

pujols again

November 11 2005, 6:56 PM

rob steinmetz has probably forgotten more about pujols than i'll ever know.
however, i'm curious why pujols' glove at the 2003 all-star game had a red nike logo
as opposed to the yellow one shown in the auction?

Rob,

That photo Rudy posted of Pujols hugging another player with his nike glove with number 57 written in silver in remembrance of Darryl Kile, don't you own that actual glove in that photo. I remember you photo matched that glove a while back and posted some pics on the forum, can we see that glove again, that's a great glove with a perfect photo patch.

Thanks, Bobby

Yes, I own the exact glove in that photo of Pujols hugging LaRussa after the sweep of the D-Backs in the 2002 NLDS. It's a spot-on photo match. That's certainly one of the cornerstones of my Pujols collection.

Interesting observation on the red Nike logo on the 2003 All-Star glove. Pujols used many Nike gloves between 2001 and 2004, so it could be he used another glove in the All-Star game, or the glove in AMI's auction is just one of several gloves he used in 2003. Obviously I don't have a record of every glove he used that year, but the red embroidery is something I've only seen on 2003 gloves.

Bobby,

Here is my glove, along with the photo match from the 2002 NLDS on-field celebration. The glove was also carried over to 2003 Spring Training, which is why it shows far more use than the photo depicts.

Also, here is another shot of the Nike glove from the 2003 All-Star Game with the red swoosh and red name embroidery - note the red interior on the glove:

Pujols glove

I am not convinced the glove is the same, the "7" in the getty image is not right on the seam of the glove, but the "7" on the pic of the glove the "7" overlaps on the seam. any other pics showing the writing on the seam?

It's a good thing I'm not trying to sell my glove...this is one tough crowd! I ordered the high resolution image from Getty - when I get it, I'll post the blown up images of my glove and the photo (at the same angle). It's most definitely the same glove.

Rob,

I agree with you, the Pujols glove you have is the exact glove in the getty photo.

If you look closely at where Albert Pujols name is embroidered, look at the Al in Albert and notice how the leather has that indentation, same thing with the letters Puj in Pujols, same indentation! Also, the odds would probably be one in a million that Albert had two nike gloves with the number 57 written in the same style and area on the glove.

Also, can you e-mail me details on how I can order images from getty and how much the price is per image.

Thanks, Bobby
