Q:I have seen your website and, correct me if I am wrong, you mostly get your jerseys from university equipment managers. Is this right? I am guessing that is why thhey pull the names off of the back of so many of them.I have been looking for some very particular game-worn pieces and I am hoping you can help. Apecifically, I am looking for game-worn jerseys from Auburn University players, used while they were at Auburn. For instance, Frank Thomas baseball jerseys, Charles Barkley basketball jerseys and multiple football jerseys, like Bo Jackson, Ronnie Brown, etc.I know that most of these, especially the older guys, are very hard to find but I can assure you that I am quite serious about this. I was hoping that you might have some kind of source for these game-worn jerseys. I have been looking for a while and have not had really any luck at all.In an unrelated question, how can I tell that the game-worn jersey I might buy really is game-worn by the player? I know that PSA can authenticate signatures, but is there someone who can authenticate the legitimacy of game-worn jerseys? HOw do I protect myself from fakes?I really appreciate your time on this and I look forward to your reply.
A:Thanks for your questions. We get our jerseys and other items from dozens of different sources, but you are correct that we do work directly with the schools in many cases. In terms of pulling the names off of the jerseys, it is my understanding of the NCAA rule that a commercial entity cannot sell anything with the likeness of a current student athlete. There are many interpretations of this rule; however the consensus seems to be that it is a good practice to remove the name on back of any underclassmen jerseys. Therefore, when we work directly with the schools, in those cases, the names are removed from the back. However, we do have thousands of jerseys which do have the names on back. This is the case because as long as the player’s eligibility has expired by the time of our purchase, it is within the rules to leave the name on the back.

As far as the other pieces you are looking for, you are absolutely correct that those items are going to be very difficult to find. Remember, unlike the pros, a player will only play at the college level for a maximum of 4 years and many times only 1 or 2 years. Therefore, the quantity of items available is quite small. All this being said, what we can do is keep our eyes out for you, and let you know if we come across any of these type items. We are approached often with offers to sell.

To your final question, I am going to offer you my opinion on this subject. First, there are many outside “experts” who will authenticate items. I don’t have a problem with this in theory; however there is one important premise you should check.

Does this authenticator buy and/or sell items too? If so, they have a conflict of interest. I believe that authenticators should authenticate and only authenticate, not function as dealers. If you try to do both, you are inherently conflicted and therefore cannot give unbiased opinions. In our case, we only acquire and sell college items, we do not authenticate independently as a service. If an item comes with a letter, contact the person who authored it and ask.

My next point is in regards to letters of authenticity. I don’t think they are worth the paper they are printed on. The reason I say this is quite simple. If someone is going to sell a fake item, then why would they have any problem printing a fake certificate to go along with it?

Thus, the advise I would offer you is as follows, stick to a dealer or organization you are comfortable with a trust (such as one of the experts on this board). If you don’t currently have such a relationship, develop one. Make some small purchases first, where if there was an issue it will have a minimal impact. Then when you develop some comfort, you can continue to work with the organization to make that “dream purchase”. This way, if a problem comes up later, can go back to that person or organization later and bring up an issue you find. Quality dealers or groups will make fewer mistakes and if they do make one, they will work with you in order to make it right.

Hope that answers all your questions let me know if there is anything else I can do for you.

Best Regards,
Scott

Q:I really appreciate the tim you took to fully answer my question. Please do keep me in mind if you get a hold of any items like the ones I asked about. Again, I know they will be difficult to find, but I appreciate your help. Would the players themselves have these types of items? I am not sure how to get a hold of them, but I figured that perhaps they might have some of their own stuff. Thank you again.
A:You are welcome and we will keep you in mind!

Scott

Q:Will you please post a reply from the General Memorabilia Discussion or email me if you know anything about Larry Bird era Indiana State University jerseys.
A:Thanks for your question. I don't know anything about the jersey, and this is the first I have seen of it.

From a 5 minute inspection of the jersey it seems to match properly. This is by no means a true authentication. As I believe acting as a dealer and authenticator is a conflict of interest, I don't authenticate. That said, if I were considering purchase of the jersey, based on what I can see I would proceed and attempt to obtain the jersey for further investigation.

Let me know if you have any other questions or if there is anything else I can do for you.

Q:I noticed the Oregon official's response within the Oregon gamers post and am curious about the NCAA regulations he mentioned. I see that you have a Lee Evans game used jersey available on your website with a nameplate. Does that violate any NCAA rule?
A:Thanks for the question. I responded directly with a post! Check it out. If you have any more questions, let me know.

Q:Greetings, I was searching the experts corner and I could not find one for footballs jerseys so i have come to you for a opinion because you are a expert in game used equipment.I had recently won a game used muhsin muhammad home jersey used this season on a ebay auction. The tagging was cut but the company who was selling the item, I have dealt with before and they sell many game used item, as well as being a extremely reputable autograph company. Please tell me what you think, mainly if it is real or not based on your expert opinion. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=019&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=290076507203&rd=1&rd=1
A:Thanks for your question. I took a look at the jersey you reference and it is a Bears NFL jersey. Allow me to be clear first of all and say that I do have expertise realtive to college jerseys, but do not consider myself an expert when it comes to NFL jerseys. Therefore, I wouldn't want to comment on the authenticity of the jersey one way or another.

That being said, I have offered my standard response as to working with a company before on this forum. I will repeat again for you here - stick to a dealer or organization you are comfortable with and trust (such as one of the experts on this board). If you don’t currently have such a relationship, develop one. Make some small purchases first, where if there was an issue it will have a minimal impact. Then when you develop some comfort, you can continue to work with the organization to make that “dream purchase”. Quality dealers or groups will make fewer mistakes and if they do make one, they will work with you in order to make it right.

Good Luck and let me know if there is anything else I can help you with!

A:Dear Joe,

Thanks for your note. You are correct, Kansas State is a difficult school to obtain. Without going into too much detail, some schools are simply more available than others. I would be happy to track down a KState jersey for you. Just send me an email request at the address below and we will jump on it ASAP!

Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you.

Q:Scott, I was wondering if you could give me some tips on how to find information regarding University of Virginia football uniforms. I am always looking for UVa items, and often have been unable to verify whether items are, in fact, from the university due to my inability to locate the necessary background information. Also, if you have any thoughts about the following post, I'd love to hear them: http://www.gameuseduniverse.com/vb_forum/showthread.php?t=9768 Thanks, Justin
A:Justin,

Thanks for your question. When you say you are looking for "information", I assume that you mean information regarding the authenticity of the uniforms and whether in fact they are from the University.

As far as determining this information, there is no "central library" of data with which to do so. I would suggest however checking three resources - www.gettyimages.com, the official site of the school and media guides/game programs. You can search online with the two sites under various search terms relating to your specific school. You can check the printed material in order to match your uniforms. This will help you to authentic photographically whether the uniform you have matches what they wore.

As far as the post you reference, the practice jerseys are almost impossible to authenticate as they are so generic. The game jerseys, based on a quick view, look like the real thing. However, I would have to go through a full authentication in order to confirm that.

Good Luck!

Scott

Q:I recently purchased what I believe to be a Game used Rondell White jersey from when he was with the Padres and I was wondering if you could tell me if it looks legit or not. Here is a link to pictures http://s210.photobucket.com/albums/bb198/mnntwns24/Rondell%20White/GU/ you can send your response to rayhoran24@hotmail.com. Thanks
A:Thanks for your email. I apologize for the delay in responding. I was having a technical issue accessing the question and answer section. Unfortunately, we really aren't qualified to authenticate a professional baseball jersey.

Q:hi scott, i have bought several jerseys from you're site and also jerseys from others who have claimed to have got it from college jersey.com, a problem i frequently have is with the miami hurricanes football jersey style 2004 and up, i am about 5-10 and 175lbs, and the jerseys that were supposed to be game worn and they always are way to small and bearly wearable, these jerseys were supposed to be worn or issued to players who are much larger than myself, could you tell me why they always run so small? thanks
A:Thanks for your question. It is a very good one. The jerseys do run very small and the reason is that they are designed to be skin tight when worn. If you notice the mid-section is particularly tight and the top of the body is a bit larger. This section is meant to offer space for the padding. All in all, many times they are tight for even "average size" people much less the larger NCAA players. While on the field they are that tight to ensure that they cannot be grabbed easily. Hope that helps!

Scott

Q:I know you are more of a college expert (my personal favorite GU items to collect, as I have many NAVY game used jerseys, helmets and jackets since I live in Annapolis), but was hoping for your help on this one. I almost believe this to be a rhetorical question, but I am seeing a Steelers game issued Bettis practice jersey, for a price that seems too good to be true. Thus, the rhetorical question. However, it has been on not one, but two auctions (here is the original auction site): http://www.gamewornauctions.net/products/2001_Jerome_Bettis_Steelers_Practice_Jersey-1919-68.html I was raised just outside of Pittsburgh, and have a very good memory, but do not recall them ever wearing black jerseys on offense in practice. I used to go to training camp and scrimmages all the time, and it just strikes me as odd. They were always white jerseys from my memory. Also, size 46 seems like an awful small size for the Bus, considering I met him and we are almost the same stature (broad shouldered and decent guts), and I wear a 54-56 jersey. I am seeing it be resold for a profit (obviously) on another site, and just do not want to shell out any money for a fake. Any help would be appreciated! Reply With Quote
A:Thanks for your question. Unfortunately, I really wouldn't feel comfortable saying too much about the jersey other than to trust your instincts - they are probably correct!

Q:Hello I recently purchased an vintage Football jersey and I was wondering if you could provide some insight into it's background. It looks like it could be an army jersey. I know that typical Army Jerseys had white middle stripe on the sleeve but Kent Stephens the curator at the College Football Hall of Fame said it it is possible that army had three yellow stripes for a season.
