Rheal Cormier, a LHP for several MLB teams, died on3/8 at age 53, a victim of cancer.
A native of Canada, Cormier pitched for 16 seasons in The Show. He is best remembered as a Cardinal (1991-94) and as a Phillie (2001-06). His career also had stops in Boston (1995, 1999-2000), Montreal (1966-67) and Cincinnati (2006-07).

Joe Altobelli, best remembered as the manager of the 1983 World Series winning Baltimore Orioles, died on 3/3 at age 88.
Altobelli's best season was also his first go-round managing the O's through mid-1985. Before that, he was the field boss for the Giants (1977-79) and afterwards served as an interim manager for the Cubs for 1 game in 1991.
Joe's MLB playing career as a LF-PH-1B was sporadic, with stints with Cleveland in both 1955 and 1957 and his last hurrah as a player with the Twins in 1961.

Irv Cross, a CB who played for the Eagles (1961-65 and 1969) and the Rams (1966-68) died on 2/28 at age 81.
Cross was a member of 2 Pro Bowl teams and wore #27 his entire NFL career.

Al Naples, a SS whose MLB career was limited to starting two consecutive games for the 1949 Browns, died on 2/26 at age 94.

Norm Sherry, a C who played for 5 years in the NL, died on 3/8 at age 89.
Sherry began his career in the Bigs with the 1959 World Series Champion Dodgers alongside his brother Larry, a main cog in the Dodgers relief corps. He remained with Los Angeles through 1962, before playing his last season in 1963 as a Met.
After that he spent numerous years in the Majors as a coach. He also spent portions of the 1976 and 1977 seasons as the manager of the California Angels.

Jeff Goldbach, whose career in pro ball began as a promising prospect in the Cubs minor league system, died on 3/7 at age 41.
A catcher who also played at 1B and in LF, Goldbach was in the Cubs organization from 1998-2002. He began the 2003 season at AA Frisco (Rangers) but never got past Double-A ball, so he turned to the independent minor leagues in mid-2003, playing there until his retirement after the 2006 season performing his trade in both the Northern League and the Frontier League.

Jim Snyder, a 2B for the Twins in the early 1960s, died on 3/9 at age 88.
Snyder was a September call-up for Minnesota in 1961, and was a back-up 2B in 1962 and 1964.
He also spent most of the 1988 season as manager of the Seattle Mariners. Taking over the post from Dick Williams, Snyder went 45-60 as the manager.

Eulogio (Frankie) de la Cruz, a RHP who pitched for 4 different teams in 4 MLB seasons, died on 3/14, 2 days after his 37th birthday.
He pitched for the Tigers (2007), Marlins (2008), Padres (2009) and Brewers (2011), finishing his MLB log with a career high of 11 appearances in one season (2011), exclusively in relief except for 1 start in 2008, and retired with a 0-0 won-lost ledger and no saves.

Ed Armbrister, an OF for the Reds from 1973-77, died on 3/17 at age 72.
Armbrister was a valuable reserve flychaser for the Big Red Machine teams, earning 2 World Series rings during his 5-year career in The Show (1975-76). He is a native of the Bahamas, being born and dying both in Nassau.

Elgin Baylor, a Hall of Famer who excelled as a player and GM, and also spent 4 seasons as a head coach, died on 3/22 at age 86.
Baylor's entire NBA playing career was spent with the Lakers, beginning in 1958-59 when the Lakers played in Minneapolis, to 1971-72 when they called Los Angeles home as the team does now. In his rookie season, he took home both the NBA Rookie of the Year award and the trophy for All-Star Game MVP. He also made 10 All-NBA teams and was named to11 squads for the NBA Al-Star Game.
After his playing career was over, he spent 4 seasons as the head coach of the New Orleans Jazz and afterwards spent 20 years in the front office of the Clippers, mainly as GM.

Bobby Brown, a utility player who contributed to the Yankees for 8 seasons, died earlier this week at age 96.
Brown appeared in 4 different World Series for the Bronx Bombers, with his career spanning from 1946-54 (excluding 1953). Later in life he was the American League President from 1984-94.

Joe Cunningham, a 1B for 3 MLB teams in a 12-year career, died on 3/25 at age 89.
After being promoted by the Cardinals to the Majors during the 1954 season, Cunningham returned near the end of the '56 campaign after spending most of that season and all of 1955 in military service. Being named to the NL All-Star team for both of the games held in 1959, he remained with St. Louis until after the 1961 season, when he was traded to the White Sox.
The South Side of Chicago remained his MLB home through mid-1964, when he was dealt to the Senators, ending his playing career there after appearing in 4 games in April 1966.

Coot Veal, a reserve SS for 6 years in the Majors, died on 3/14 at age 88.
His career, which ran from 1958-63, was spent primarily with the Tigers, although he played for the expansion Senators in 1961, and in 1 game for the Pirates in 1962.

Mike Bell, the current bench coach for the Minnesota Twins, died on 3/26 due to cancer. He was 46.
Part of the third generation of the Bell family in MLB (son of Buddy Bell, grandson of the late Gus Bell), his playing career in The Show was limited to 19 games at 3B with the 2000 Reds.

Howard Schnellenberger, a coach for over a half century in both college football and the NFL, died over the weekend at age 87.
He was the head coach of the Baltimore Colts in 1973 and part of 1974, this after he was hired away from Miami, for whom he was offensive coordinator for the undefeated, untied 1972 team. He also guided a once-awful Miami Hurricanes NCAA team, which became a successful program after his arrival, to an NCAA Championship during his tenure there.
He left to coach a Miami entry in the then-new USFL, but the team never got off the ground, and he returned to coaching in the college ranks. His final stop was at Florida Atlantic, spending a decade there before his retirement in 2011. The team's home field was later renamed in his honor.

Randy Tate, a RHP who went 5-13 as a starting pitcher in his only MLB season with the 1975 Mets, died on 3/25 at age 68.

Ken Reitz, a 3B who played for 11 years in the NL, 8 of them with the Cardinals, died on 3/31 at age 69.
Nicknamed "The Zamboni" due to his sure-handed defense, Reitz was named to 1 NL All-Star team and won 1 Gold Glove during his career. In those other 3 seasons, he played for the Giants (1976), Cubs (1981) and Pirates (1982).

Chuck Schilling, the 2B for the Red Sox from 1961-65, died on 3/30 at age 83.
His best season was his rookie season, in which he set career highs in games played (158), RBI (62) and BA (.249). He also posted his career high in fielding percentage (.991) and led the AL in plate appearances (738).

Phillip Adams, a DB for Oakland and 5 other NFL teams from 2010-15, died on 4/8 as the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after killing 5 other people. He was 32.
It's suspected that his abnormal and criminal behavior may have stemmed from brain damage caused by multiple concussions during his NFL career, and studies are being done to determine any connection between the two.

Longtime Pacers coach Bobby "Slick" Leonard, a Basketball HoFer, died on 4/13 at age 88.
Leonard began in the NBA as a player for 7 seasons with the first five calling the shots for the Lakers (4 seasons in Minneapolis and 1 in Los Angeles), and played his final two seasons in Chicago, the first one with the Chicago Packers, and the second with the renamed Chicago Zephyrs, where he also coached the team. He remained their coach when the team moved to Baltimore and became the Bullets first head coach for just that inaugural season.
Five seasons later, he took the helm with the Indiana Pacers, remaining there for nearly 12 season, and guiding the Pacers to 3 ABA Championships during his time there.

Leroy Keyes, a DB/RB for 5 seasons in the NFL, died on 4/15 at age 74.
An alumnus of Purdue, Keyes played for 5 years in the pros: 1969-72 with the Eagles, and 1973 (Chiefs). He was a 1st round draft choice, and #3 overall in the 1969 NFL draft.

Jack Smith, a RHP who spent parts of 3 season as a reliever in the NL, died on 4/7 at age 85
Smith had roster expansion callups with the Dodgers in 1962 and '63 before pitching for a half-season in 1964 with the Braves, where he went 2-2.

Tom Robson, a PH-DH-1B who had brief playing stints with Texas in 1974 and '75 died on 4/20 at age 75.
After his retirement, Robson had coaching stints with both the Rangers and the Mets.

Terrence Clarke, a basketball star in his first season with the NCAA Kentucky Wildcats, died on 4/22 in an auto accident. He was 19.
Clarke had declared his intention to leave college for the 2021 NBA Draft, and was considered to be very likely to be picked in the draft.

Mike Davis, a DB who played for the Raiders in both Oakland and Los Angeles from 1978-85 and was a contributor to two Super Bowl Championship teams there died over the weekend at age 65.
Davis returned an interception for a TD in 1982. He attempted a comeback with the Chargers in 1987, appearing in 8 games before hanging his cleats up for good after the season.

Adrian Garrett, a LH PH-C-OF with 4 MLB teams during his 8 years in The Show, died on 4/22 at age 78.
Garrett first appeared in the Majors in 1966 with 4 games played for the first Atlanta Braves team. After serving in the military, he returned in 1970, appearing in 3 games with the Cubs. After 2 seasons with Oakland in 1971-72, he was dealt back to the Cubs, playing with them from 1973-75, joining the Angels for the later portion of '75, and remaining there in 1976 before retiring. His brother is 1969 Mets champion Wayne Garrett.

Geno Hayes, a LB for 7 seasons in the NFL, died on 4/26 at age 33.
Drafted by Tampa Bay in the 6th round of the 2008 NFL Draft, the Florida State alum remained with the Bucs through 2011, He followed that up with one year with the Bears and closed out his career in 2014 after 2 seasons with the Jaguars.

Pete Lammons, a TE who spent 6 of his 7 years in pro football with the New York Jets, died on 4/29 at age 77.
Drafted by the Jets in the 1966 AFL Draft after a college career at Texas, Lammons was part of the fabled Super Bowl 3 Jets Champions, and also appeared in 1 Pro Bowl. His career ended in 1972 with Green Bay.
Over his 7 seasons in the NFL and AFL, he only missed 3 gams.

Granville Waiters, a center for 5 NBA seasons in the 1980s, died on 3/23 at age 60.
The ex-Buckeye spent 2 seasons (1983-84 and 1984-85) with the Pacers, the next season with Houston, and his last 2 NBA campaigns with the Bulls.

Bob Plager, one of the NHL Plager brothers who spent 14 seasons as a defenseman in the NHL, died on 3/24 at age 78.
Plager's active playing career began during the 1964-65 season in the Original 6 days with the Rangers, playing there for 3 seasons. After that he spent 11 seasons skating for the Blues, one of the league's Second Six teams.

Del Crandall, a catcher who spent 16 years in The Show and later managed in the Majors, died on 5/5 at age 91.
Crandall, as a Milwaukee Braves catcher (1953-63) played in 8 All-Star Games, won 4 Gold Gloves, and was the starting catcher on both the World Series Champion Braves in 1957 and the NL pennant winning Braves in '58.
When he was promoted to the majors by the Boston Braves in June 1949, he became the youngest starting catcher in MLB history at that point (age 19). He finished second to Brooklyn's Don Newcombe in NL Rookie of the Year voting, and played for Boston in 1950, as well, before serving the next two years in the military.
When he returned to the Braves in 1953, they had relocated to Milwaukee and were in their first season in the Beer City. After he finished his time with the Braves, he spent the final 3 years of his career with 3 different teams: Giants (1964), Pirates (1965) and Indians (1966).
After he retired, he returned to the Bigs as a manager for the Brewers (1972-75) and the Mariners (1983-84).

Ray Miller, a longtime coach in MLB who managed both the Twins (1985-86) and the Orioles (1998-99) died earliert his week at age 76.
Miller's minor league pitching career spanned 10 seasons, mostly in the farm systems of Cleveland and Baltimore, although his initial season in pro ball was spent in the Giants organization (1964). Although his final 5 seasons of pitching were at the Triple-A level, h nver pitched in the Majors.

Shaler Halimon, who took an off-the-bench role as a shooting guard and also as a small forward for 5 different pro teams, died on 4/19 at age 76.
From the 1968-69 season through 1972-73, Halimon played for 4 NBA teams (76ers, Bulls, Trailblazers and Hawks) and also for the Dallas Chaparrals in the ABA.

Hal Breeden, a 1B-PH for five years in the NL, died on 5/3 at age 76.
Breeden came to The Show in 1971 with the Cubs, and followed up with 4 seasons as a Montreal Expo.
His brother is
Danny Breeden, a back-up catcher for the Cubs and Reds over parts of 2 seasons.

Rennie Stennett, a native of Panama who played mostly 2B and SS for 11 years in the NL, died 5/18 at age 70.
Stennett came to the Bigs during the 1971 season with Pittsburgh, with whom he earned 2 World Series rings (1971 and 1979). After the latter, he played his final 2 seasons with the Giants.
In a game at Wrigley Field in 1975 that I attended, Stennett went 7-for-7 at the plate in a 22-0 annihilation of the Cubs. He became the first (and still only) MLB player to go 7-for-7 in a 9-inning game.

Richie Scheinblum, a reserve OF for the Indians and 5 other teams over an 8-year MLB career, died on 5/10 at age 78.
After spending all or part of his first four seasons with Cleveland, he bounced around, appearing with thee expansion Senators, Royals, Reds, Angels and Cardinals. He was a solid reserve outfielder who only played in at least 100 games in a season thrice (1969 Indians, 102, 1972 Royals, 134 and 1973 Reds/Angels, 106.)
