    Elway Helmet Specs

    Forum Members:

First off, here's wishing a Happy Thanksgiving holiday to you and yours! Here's to celebrating all that we have to be thankful for.

As many of you are already aware, I am pretty much a "jersey guy" and am seeking to tap into the experience of those with more helmet experience to assist in a project that we have underway. Working with Curtis from HelmetHut, we have a project underway to create a series of display helmets that depict the evolution of the Denver Broncos' helmets design/style changes through the team's history. With extensive photographic study and Curtis' expertise in the area of vintage helmets, we have so far pieced together a collection of 7 helmets. We currently have 3 more remaining in order to complete this series and one of those has turned into a roadblock of sorts.

Specifically, I am hoping to recreate a historically accurate representation of a John Elway helmet from the period of 1986-'88. Do any of you know, with some degree of certainty, exactly what style of helmet John would have worn during this period? One person has suggested that John "liked the AF-2 model", but was unsure of when (or even if) he began using this.

Any help that any of you may be able to provide in terms of the exact model worn by John during this period would be greatly appreciated.

    Best regards,
    Patrick W. Scoggin

    Re: Elway Helmet Specs

elway wore an m155, at least in 1987 - as a matter of fact, it seems that many broncos wore the riddell m155 model during that era; i have three game used m155 broncos helmets in my collection.

here's a photo of elway raising his helmet in victory after a 1987 conference championship win over cleveland - it's clearly an m155.

here's a photo of what was advertised as a game used elway m155 that sold at auction a couple of years ago - it went for $7k by the time bidding closed. the ad doesn't seem to offer much in the way of provenance but it looks pretty good to me.

here's another elway helmet that sold at auction a couple of years ago, another m155...

and here are a couple of other game used m155 bronco helmets that have sold at auction...

hope this helps... btw, you have an outstanding website!

I had a circa 1990 Elway helmet one time and it was a M155.
