2004 Devil Rays Jerseys Help? Opinions?

Here is the situation, I have a 2004 BJ Upton Tampa Bay Devil Rays Home Jersey. I am looking at the numerals and comparing it both to the Rays and one of the other jerseys I have from 2004 of Scott Kazmir. THe problem I'm having is that the 9 on the front and back and the nameplate of 'Upton' seems to be a darker color then that of the Rays on front of the jersey. Additionally the numbers are darker on the Upton jersey than the Kazmir jersey I have. However, I cannot compare fonts as the Kazmir nameplate has been removed. Has anyone ever seen anything like this where the numbers and nameplate are a different color? Is this a possibility because of the numbers and nameplate being added later in the season when Upton got called up?

    Thanks for any opinions.

Additionally, I can add pictures of the jerseys, however, with the lighting in my house, I am not sure that my camera will pick up the suttle differences right now.

I noticed a similar thing with a 2003 jersey of mine, although the "Tampa Bay" was actually darker---I don't have the jerseys at hand, but all the information is posted here: http://www.network54.com/Forum/42715...+Tampa+jerseys
Additionally, I'll try to take another look sometime next week.

On a different note, if you have a chance do you think you could measure the numbers, as referenced in the linked post? The back number(s) with trim (height+width), back number(s) trim only (width) and front number(s) with trim (height+width) would be extremely appreciated.

    LWMM,

The number size on the front is 4 1/4" tall by 3" wide. The back number is 7 7/8" tall by 4 3/4" wide, this includes the trim of the numbers. The lettering for Upton on back is 3 1/4" tall. Hope this helps. I will get pictures of the jersey posted here in a little bit.

The back number size seems to be 3/16" smaller than that of the Kazmir jersey. The number size on the front is 1/16" smaller.

Here are the pics, you can't really tell the color differentiation between the number and the Rays, however there is one.

in general, when i see a jersey that has darker numbers it tells me that:

    a) the numbers were added at a later date.
    b) the jersey itself was worn prior to the addition of the numbers, hence the fading of the team wordmark.

if i see lighter numbers, then it tells me that someone removed worn numbers from another jersey and put them onto a newer jersey.

in 2004, robert fick started the season with the devil rays and wore #9. he wore #9 until they released him on 8/18/2004. upton was called up on 08/02/2004. he first wore #35. (at the time upton was called up, fick was wearing #9). randall simon was signed on 08/19/2004. when he came up he took upton's #35. upton then took #9. upton wore #9 from approx. 08/19 to 10/03. perhaps they took upton's #35 jersey, stripped off the numbers and put on #9? i'd look for any traces of previous numbers, as well i'd look for any evidence that the nameplate was once removed/resewn.

    rudy.
