Exclamation ALERT: Grey Flannel Phishing Scam E-Mails!

    Fellow GU Fanatics:

I wanted to bring to your attention that, within the last 24 hours, I have received, four (3 different) e-mails of the "phishing" variety what all have the surface appearance of having originated from Grey Flannel Auctions. The e-mails appear to have been sent by gfcsports@aol.com and one of the messages received is shown below:

    PATRICK,

Thank you for your recent bid.

Lot# 1788, 2001 Terrell Davis Denver Broncos Game-Used Home Jersey , Current Bid: $2142, Your Max Bid: $2142Description: In the late 1990s there was no more dominant player in the NFL than Terrell Davis. Davis marched the Broncos to Superbowl glory with his 2008 yards and 21 TDs in 1998. In the neck of this navy blue jersey is a white label with black ironed-on numbers reading "01-44" denoting the year and size, respectively. To the right of this tag is another white tag reading "S." Inside the "V" neck is the "NFL Equipment" embroidered patch. On the left front tail is the "Reebok" manufacturer's label. Adjacent are two white flag tags labeled "46" and "4"LB" denoting size and four extra inches in body length, respectively. The right inside tail has a white label with material and wash information. On the back of the shirt is a navy blue nylon nameplate with the player name "T. Davis." The player number "30" appears on the front, back, and on each shoulder of the jersey. All letters and numbers are made of white on orange tackle twill. Featured on each sleeve is the "Reebok" logo patch and the "Broncos" embroidered team logo patch. The jersey shows game-use and appears to have no alterations of any kind.

Note that white the sender's e-mail address matches, the domain extension of the hyperlinks do not match those of Grey Flannel.

I suppose that even us benign GU collectors aren't immune...

I too received a large number of these, both from the years 2005, 2006, 2007. The links are actually for the auctions I bid on. What bothers me is my name was correct in the greeting.

If these didn't come from GF, then that means someone has gained access to their system and perhaps has also gained access to your personal information, including any credit card info and bidding number/password.

Not real happy with this possibility.

My email box also got pounded by a number of these messages. Most were on items I had bid on in past auctions, while a couple were not.

I remember that they were in the process of revamping their website. My guess would be that the emails did somehow get pushed out from them during this process, and are not of the phishing variety. Either way, I hope to see a follow-up from them once they get to the office explaining just what has happened.

Who will be named "King of Spam?

I think you're going to have a hard time topping this one.
As of 9am I have gotten 160 emails from them. (Some about things I have bid on over the years, most are things I have not.)

    Hey Everyone,

I just called Grey Flannel and spoke with Debbie. She confirmed that the emails were accidentally sent out during some system work they were doing. She apologized and confirmed there was no auction in progress and that the bidding emails were sent out by mistake.

The way the url was disguised to be a Grey Flannel website looks just like an ebay or paypal phishing scam. I'm sure they are not happy about this!

i think this merits pursuing david - would you be up for contacting debbie at gf to see if she has a reasonable explanation as to why their system would do this? perhaps ask her to pass you along to one of their it folks?
