I personally would pass due to the lack of a date tag on the bottom front. Ryan had these sewn to his 1993 gamers since he had announced it was his last season. His plan was to donate many of his 1993 gamers to charity. I found a close-up of the tag via this auction house: http://www.americanmemorabilia.com/A...ction_ID=37530

i don't have concerns per se. i simply meant to say that if the jersey was bad, then it'd be most likely that the most notable place you'd see it would be the nob, specifically the "A". for one reason or another, the style of the "A" on these shirts (sharp-top or blunt-top) tends be the most noticeable giveaway. personally, i'm not sure exactly how the font should look. i haven't studied ryan's goodman texas gamers. i just wanted to say that if you were to study them, study the nob fonts closely.

here are 2 photos of ryan in 1993. to me, the nobs look to be in 2 different fonts. again, it's most pronounced in the "A". maybe i'm wrong or maybe goodman had quality control issues.

anyway, the nolan ryan page has some great info:
"While Nolan was on the Angels, the team used Goodman & Sons to make their home jerseys one year and road jerseys the next. During this time, Nolan developed a strong preference for the 'feel' of G&S uniforms. From that time forward, he always purchased G&S jerseys for himself regardless of what his team issued to him... The accepted belief is that Nolan only wore G&S uniforms when he was scheduled to pitch. On all other game days as well as for PR photos, he wore the team issued jersey. There has been some debate as to whether or not Nolan ever pitched in a non-G&S jersey. Although it would be rare, it is very possible that it occurred from time to time. For example, let's assume that Nolan was not scheduled to pitch until the next game so he wore his team issued jersey for today's game. Then, at the last minute, the scheduled pitcher was scratched and Nolan was called on to pitch. Under these conditions, he probably wore the team issued jersey as opposed to going and changing his entire uniform. Since this is the exception and not the rule, most non-G&S Nolan Ryan uniforms are considered game issued but not game used. Therefore, their value is usually substantially less that Nolan's G&S jerseys. The real problem about considering investing in Nolan Ryan game used equipment is the fact that G&S did not put set tags in their jerseys until 1993. This single fact makes any G&S jersey, from any player, relatively easy to counterfeit...Nolan actually did have 34 jerseys made for his final year with the Rangers. The story is that he planned to start approximately 34 games during the year and he would use each jersey only once and then use them to raise money for charities (including the Nolan Ryan Foundation). For 1993, Nolan had 18 home and 16 road jerseys made. The home jerseys were tagged SET 1/18, SET 2/18, etc. The road jerseys were tagged SET A/16, B/16, etc.
..Since Ryan's G&S jerseys (except for 1993) contain no set tags it is very difficult, and impossible in some cases, to determine the actual year of the jersey. Therefore, there is no way to track, for example, how many 1992 Ryan jerseys there are currently on the market. Without set tags, team personnel, and others with connections, could make easy money by getting blank G&S jerseys and have '34' and 'RYAN' sewn on them. Did this actually happen? There's no real way to tell. That's why it is extremely important to know the source and history of the jersey that you are considering purchasing. This is also why Nolan Ryan G&S jerseys from the Texas Rangers (except for 1993) are generally valued less than his jerseys from other years. Since Ryan's real fame didn't come until his Ranger years, it is more likely that someone would counterfeit those jerseys as opposed to Astros, Angels or Met jerseys."

i suppose if i was buying a 1993 ryan shirt, i'd look for a set tag. if the set number was high enough, i'd also look for the HEC memorial which they wore beginning in late august until the end of the year.

despite his lofty predictions, nolan ended up making only 13 starts in 1993, not 34. i wonder what happened to all those un-used jerseys that were made up.

monkie, personally i would pass on the jersey unless it's coming directly from ryan himself with an explanation as to why it's missing the set tag.

i've seen the photos of ryan pitching in rawlings shirts. i have a hunch those are all spring training games. perhaps his goodman jerseys were delayed. as griffeyfan mentioned, scoreboard released ryan rawlings shirts, making the mess even worse. i don't believe they released them in '93 though. from what i recall, they were released in 1989 and possibly 1990.

I've heard that the patch on the sleeve was placed on the Rangers jerseys late 92. So can this possibly be a late 92 game used jersey? Has anyone else seen a jersey like this?

someone's giving you bad info. it can't be a '92 jersey because the patch wasn't used in '92. the patch was meant to honor the final year of arlington stadium, which was 1993. if you look at the patch it has the years 1972-1993. they wore it in the final year that the rangers would be playing at arlington stadium - 1993.

the HEC memorial was meant to honor H.E. Chiles, a one-time rangers executive who died august 22, 1993.

i've seen many texas rangers gamers from 1992 and 1993. in 1992, they wore no patches throughout the entire year. in 1993, they began the season wearing the arlington patch. after Chiles passed away, they wore the HEC memorial for the remainder of the season.

the jersey you're showing doesn't add up. they didn't wear in the patch in any year except 1993 and in 1993, ryan's gamers had set tags. it is technically possible that ryan wore a jersey in 1993 without a set tag, although unlikely. if this is such a jersey then i'd want to see some exceptionally strong provenance (ie: from ryan himself) with hard proof.

    mario

here are 2 photos from getty taken late in the season. there is no arlington patch present. there is a litany of photos out there of the '92 rangers. none of them show an arlington patch.
