Ed Walsh Studio photo

First of all, thanks for hosting this site and for including me in the group. Hopefully I can add something here and there in addition to gleaning knowledge in a field I know little about.

I'm thinking about trading or selling the following piece. I've contacted a couple of auction houses as well as a couple photography experts and have gotten little help as to value. I was hoping to get some varying opinions from the experts here. If you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer.

Without going into a long story, here is a post that most of you may have seen on the Network54 forum a while back after Scott Jeter had ID'd the player.


I got back from a week in Vegas Wednesday morning and had some wonderful news waiting for me from Scott Jeter.

Thanks to his tireless help and detective work (I can't thank him enough), the riddle of my Walinger studio portrait has been solved. In additon to Scott, I'd like to thank the following people for all their help as well (in no particular order, but all supplied valuable information to the quest)...Bob Hoie, Marshall Fogel, TJ from TJs Collectibles, Jim Nitz, Ted (BlackSoxFan), Gary Sheckard, Scott Mosley, Bill Hickman, Freddy Berowski (Baseball HOF), David Rudd, Barry Sloate, and Mark Armour. Heres the proof Scott supplied that convinced me.

He first identified the medal by finding Nick Altrock's 1906 Chicago White Sox medal (and I looked and looked). Here that is along with the one from my photo (if you look close enough, you can make out "White Sox" in mine).

From there, he was able to zero in on Ed Walsh....heres some photos of Ed he found online along with mine.

Chicago White Sox from 1904 - 1916 and finished his career with the Boston Braves in 1917. My guess is it was taken very early in his career, probably shortly after the 1906 season.

Super piece Max, I've certainly never seen another one.

And yes....my photo would make a great companion piece. As soon as I figure out what its worth, I'll offer it to ya !

Doesn't anyone wanna take a guess? I realize there can't be too many like it, but someone knowledgeable in vintage photos who follows what they bring at auction I would think could take a shot. I'm not looking for a hard figure...just an idea of value.

if i had to guess at value, id say 400-600 but id strongly recommend going through an auction house rather than ebay- this is a specialty item and unique enough that i would try to give it exposure to more serious buyers

i recall a joe jackson studio "plain clothes" picture not too long ago that went for around $1000. i think it's actually more desirable to have the player in uniform though the medal in your photograph is a nice touch
