Smile The Ultimate Ted Williams Item

My Brother picked this up for me at an auction about a year ago and had it buried in storage...finally today he cleaned out storage.

It's the Honus Wagner of Croquet sets!

That's neat Dan. I have many sports in my collection but can't say I have any croquet. I like the Ted W. endorsement sign. Nice condition..looks like it wasn't used much.

On a side note to unusual sports items...I was watching some of the curling in the olympics, shuffle board on ice. Got to say it's pretty cool. May try to find a curling stone on ebay!! (just kiddin')

Since you are talking Curling, could someone please explain the game to me?

I watched it this morning, and for some reason they never explained how the game is scored or played. Funny, every poker television show explains basic rules. I know this was the ladies gold medal game, but still, explain it every time since it is not a known sport in the USA.

They said in Canada Curling is #2 behind hockey. Funny, I remember when I lived in Boston years ago the game was candle-pin bowling. I haven't seen that game since I left The East Coast.

An item like that should be protected. May I suggest a Mickey Mantle car alarm?

    Curling?

Think of it as shuffleboard on ice.

Eight rocks are thrown in turn by each team, 2 per team member. The sweeping controls the distance and the amount the rock curls.

At the end of each end, the scoring is one point for each of your stones that are closer to the button (the centre of the rings) than the first stone of the other team. Ten ends (innings) to a game.

As for curling being the #2 sport in Canada, I can only hope not. It's very popular in rural areas, and the tournaments can draw large crowds in certain cities. However, it is not considered a mainstream sport, like hockey, football or baseball.

Someone should tell the announcer on USA that Curling is not the #2 sport in Canada then. I couldn't believe it when he said it, but I figured this is a major Olympic live broadcast, how could he not be telling the truth?

Curling is huge in Canada. I never saw cross Canada baseball or football tournaments on TV, but I did see curling. As a kid, I recall curling being on every Saturday night on CBC. And hour or teo before HNIC.

I prefer to do my drinking on surfaces that provide somewhat more friction.

    Re: Co-ed Curling??

I saw the ladies gold medal match too...those gals are good!!

I was very impressed with the accuracy. This game looks tough, but it doesn't appear to require much physical or athletic ability. So.. if ones size, speed and atheltic ability don't matter, hy are there mens and womens curling teams? Is one better than the other? Head-to-head would the men beat the women or vice versa? Do they have co-ed curling or men vs. women?
