I would estimate at at least $20,000 to $30,000...
stumbled across this entertaining video clip of a "pro" in action - in this case the "pro" is simeon lipman, consultant and consignment director for heritage auction galleries & christies. apparently lipman is a regular on the pbs tv series "roadshow".
in this clip lipman tells an understandably gleeful gentleman that his jersey is indeed an authentic sayers garb and "I would estimate it at least $20,000 to $30,000...". lipman especially likes the jersey because of its extensive use and repairs and tells the gentleman "It's not like today, where a football player gets a new jersey every game." who knew.
hope the guy with the big smile on his face didn't spend the $20k-$30k based on lipman's professional opinion - hammer price was $12k the first time around and $10k the second time around.
history:
07 2006 - appraised by lipman
10 2006 - listed by heritage, hammer price $12k
03 2007 - roadshow segment airs, lipman announces $20-$30k worth
10 2007 - listed by heritage again, hammer price $10k

I would estimate that his estimate was 2 to 3X more than market value!

Typical "reality show" b.s. - 1 part reality, 9 parts dramatic hype, editinf, direction, and spin.

i wonder if that's the secret to snagging high-end consigners; just tell them you can get them 2x-3x more than they'll really get. personally, i like how lipman wasn't even close to what his own auction house ended up getting! priceless. note that lipman actually said "at least $20,000 to $30,000". the jersey closed at half of the "at least" amount. in other vocations, you'd be fired for having that great a margin of error. this guy's the consignment director?
