Did I ever tell you my A-Rod Poker Story?

Ok, I'll tell it again.

A few weeks after Chris Moneymaker's World Series of Poker victory was televised, I was playing $30-$60 limit hold 'em at The Bellagio in the middle of the night. The guy sitting next to me made a comment that he though the guy at the table behind us was a NASCAR (now Sprint) driver. I laughed as I told him it was Alex Rodriguez, the highest paid player in baseball. A-Rod was playing $15-$30 limit hold 'em.

Him and his buddies left the room, and I went out after A-Rod. I introduced myself, told him about my friendship with some mutual friends from Seattle who sold me a lot of his autographed and game used "crap" as I called it. He told me his items are not "crap" and I told him I was using slang.

He then proceeded to ask me about playing full time professional poker. He asked about the lifestyle and the swings. It was neat to have a guy who at the time was making $25-million a year to work 8-9 months and play a game kids play for free in parks every day.

We parted ways and I returned to the poker room. Two hours later I look up (it must be 4-5AM now) to see Alex and his two friends at the podium looking for a poker game they can all play together. I suggested that we start a $1 - $2 no limit game with a $100.00 buy-in.

His buddies said that would be fine, but get this, A-Rod thought I was hustling him! I couldn't believe it. I wanted to play poker with the legend (so he could be 3rd on the list of most famous people I have played poker with as Leonardo and Toby are still #1 and #2) and someday Home Run King.

He really thought I was trying to hustle him in a poker game, I just knew if we started a low limit game so him and his buddies can play on the same table, the game would fill up with a list because everyone in the room wanted to play poker with A-Rod.

Oh well, we never got to play and even though he loves poker, I never saw him in a poker room again.

On another note, I participated in an autograph session with Derrek Lee Wednesday and when we started talking about poker D-Lee asked us all about the best casinos to play in Chicago. Amazing, I find about every other autograph session I do these days the players all play poker these days.
