    RIP Mickey Vernon

Batting champ in 1946, '53, Vernon dies at age 90

Mickey Vernon, who batted .286 over 20 big league seasons and won two batting titles for the Washington Senators, died Wednesday at Riddle Memorial Hospital in Media, Pa., six days after suffering a stroke.
Vernon, who was 90, is among 10 baseball greats on the Veterans' Committee ballot for consideration for next year's Hall of Fame induction class.
Vernon won the 1946 American League batting title with a .353 average and the 1953 crown when he batted .337. The left-handed-hitting first baseman finished with 172 home runs and 1,311 RBIs and also stole 137 bases in his career. A seven-time All-Star, Vernon played for five teams in a career that spanned four decades.
He later managed the Senators in 1961 and '62 and for 40 games of the '63 season, finishing with a 135-227 record.
Vernon is survived by a daughter, Gay. Funeral arrangements are not yet complete.

    Re: RIP Mickey Vernon

I have interviewed MANY players from this era, and if Mickey Vernon's name came up, there was only one reply: There was no nicer human being in the sport of baseball than Mickey Vernon.

When all is said and done, I think that's about the best thing to be remembered for.
