Re: Pro Athletes From Your High School
Also, as a football and baseball player in high school, I played against Daryl Strawberry who played at one of our rival high schools (Crenshaw), and Jay Shroeder who player at our number 1 rival, Palasades High School. He was a catcher like I was, but our baseball team beat up on his. We were good....real good. I caught a kid in high school who threw 95 MPH. However, their football team would rock us (along with everybody else in their way....)
Everybody knows where Strawberry ended up......Some of you may not remember Jay at first.....He was the quarterback for the Washington Redskins for many years, eventually playing also for the Raiders, Bengals, and Cardinals.
Forrest Whitaker, the actor...was his teammate. As center and defensive end for our football team, I got to block Forrest who was a nose/defensive tackle. He was tough, a good player.
My claim to fame in high school was throwing out Daryl Strawberry, who tried to steal on me. I had a gun...I threw him out by 10 feet...he didn't even slide, took it like a man, slowed up into the tag and jogged off the field. At his next at bat, he walked up to me and said "Hey bro....you got yourself an ARM!"
He then proceeded to hit a home run about 200 feet (I kid you NOT) over our short-porch right field fence when my pitcher missed his low and outside fastball over the plate......EVERYONE knew Straw was going to make it to the pros...he was scarey good.
