It looks like the 2 was written on the bat at the same time the 58 was written. The marker used is the same thickness and color. 2 is probably a reference number for maybe the weight of the bat, 3"2" ounces.
After he joined the Yanks, he took his bats and crossed out the 58 and wrote his name "MOE" not knowing what number he was going to be. The maker used to cross out the 58 and write MOE look to be the same.
Just my theory though.
