Would not say out of gas at all. He enjoyed his time in Boston but wanted the chance to be an everyday player after last season. I feel that with the economy and age, there was not that opportunity to become an everyday player one last time.

Should be a great position for him.

I watched Casey here with the Tigers for several years. Great guy, great glove, hitting sucked. That is why Detroit said goodbye and he had the swan song with Boston.

As tuff as it is to stay in the bigs, when something deteriorates like hitting, it is time to go. Casey probably knew he could not compete as a full time player soonto a network. Smart move by him. Class act.

I have to disagree with "hitting sucked". He's a lifetime .302 hitter with over 1500 hits. In 1999 he was 4th in the league in hits and BA. If you subtract his 2 for 10 in his rookie year, he averaged 139 hits over 11 seasons. He was a 3 time All Star, hit 9 for 17 in the World Series and over .400 in all post season contests that he played in. Not to mention, he was one of the most fan friendly players to walk between the lines.

I'd like to suck and have a career like that! Kudos to him for walking away.

I just watched a little of '06 World Series this weekend, so I just saw these numbers. In the '06 post season, in 17 AB, BA .529 OBP .529 SLG .1000. Regular season 2007 - BA .296 OBP .353 SLG .393. For a bench player in Boston in '08, Casey seemed to get several key hits during the regular season. He hit .322 in 200 AB's. Actually, Francona received some criticism for not using him more in the post season. "Hitting Sucked" seems a little harsh! He is a class act, and could be listed in "Best Signers" thread.

I might have been harsh with "hitting sucked" statement. Let me rephrase that to: not consistant enough to any longer play day-to-day at this level... How is that? As far as my take on him in Detroit, yes he had key hits and played a nice first base, a hall of famer as a person, but in Detroit he was not an ideal every day first baseman in my book. He left on a good note, and staying beyond 08 would be construed as a hanger on.

I coach little league, have done so for years. If I was to show the kids a player to exemplify on and off the field, it could in fact be Sean Casey.

Regarding the 2006 World Series, I watched that crash and burn and try not to think about it. If it were replayed here on tv I would not/could not watch it. Here is a team picked to win the thing, and they hand it over on a silver platter. Pitching was pitiful. Over rated.

2008 club is picked to go to the Series. Tigers have went out and spent more money. We end up in last place. Need I say more?
