New Sports Museum in LA Now Closed to Public

Jeez, this only opened 4 months ago and is now closed to the general public due to low attendance. Just another sign of the times.

......And just last week I was talking to my wife about going to see it soon.

Now we'll have to round up 13 friends to make a field trip out of it. Nice.

"Cypres said he had hoped for a minimum attendance of 500 people per day, at least on the weekends. Instead, he said last week, he got maybe 100."

i don't know how cypres ever thought he was going to get 500 people a day into that place. there probably aren't even 1000 serious collectors in all of LA. meanwhile there were about 10 security guards in there when i went. he was paying more in security per hour than he was taking in at the gate. i thought the attendance would spike in the first month and then just rocket downwards after most in LA had seen it. walking through it i couldn't figure out how it could possibly last for a year.

if cypres can't make it work in a behemoth the size of LA, i can't imagine what it bodes for MEARS' new "conference facility/museum/research center/etc" in the tiny hamlet of milwaukee.

"It will be structured much like a private club in that entrance to the center along with special events and seminars will be restricted to MEARS members only which will also allow members to see the displayed inventory, the museum which will house the single largest collection of Muhammad Ali memorabilia in the world along with the collections of Milwaukee items and some great none sports collections such as toys, Planet of the Apes, 1880-1900 western holster collection, an antique gun collection of weapons used from 1865-1899 in the winning of the west which has an example of just about every single gun worn on the hip or carried in a saddle. Inventory will include the wall of bats which totals more than a thousand examples, one of the largest inventories of vintage Indy 500 items, movie posters, slot cars, and sundry sports memorabilia and autographs. The new 45 seat theater will be used for seminars and special film festivals of old sports movies and documentary's"

anyone planning on going to milwaukee just to see dave's planet of the apes toys or his western holster collection? 45 seat theater? are there even 45 collectors in wisconsin? if there are, i hope they're all mears members! good luck with that "private club".

anyway, here...relive the LA Sports Museum in all its glory:

It might be cool to get a GUF group together to check out the museum. If out-of-towners are coming in and want to try and set something up, let me know.

I am a serious collector and live about 3 miles from this LA Museum. I wasn't motivated to visit, I'd rather search for items that are for sale.
KingJammy....please don't knock POTA...there are many real men who enjoy their doll collections...including me!

Seriously, I am selling this MEGO POTA Astronaut MIB for $115 postpaid. Contact me if interested.

    Rudy...

99.9% of the dealers in this hobby have absolutely no clue on how to run a successfull buisness...

although we all love our rare memorabilia....a "research center" is far from any Hall of Fame...the Hall's will always be there, but a research center in WI?

Now is a time for "survival of the fittest"....being creative while trying to keep your overhead down...I've never dealt with Mears, but it appears that they are one of the few good guys in this hobby....it would be a shame to see a good guy dissappear because of a bad business decision
