GFC Joe Morris Giants
Hey everyone,
I was looking at the New York Giants game used Joe Morris jersey in the Grey Flannel auction which is listed circa 1988. I was trying to figure out what year it could be from. Wondering if I could bounce my research off you folks.
GFC listing
http://www.greyflannelauctions.com/LotDetail3.aspx?lotid=20755
Joe Morris played for the Giants from 1982-1988
Note the style of the #2 in the Grey Flannel jersey
In 1985, the Giants switched to this font style on the #2
Which means the jersey would have to be from 1982, 1983 or 1984
Here are some photos of the Giants numbers from those years
1982
1983
1984
To my untrained eye, (I am not a paid authenticator) the numbering looks thicker in the game photos. Did the Giants use different thicknesses in those seasons? Interested in opinions from people who know.
Thanks

Re: GFC Joe Morris Giants
Eric I agree with you. Actually it was the first thing I noticed before even the year of the font style.
The the font numbers are waaaay to thin. I am not a football jersey expert myself but I am going by the pictures you supplied from Getty. Not only that!! I would imagine from use and the Jersey being over 20 years old the font numbers themselves would be slightly dulled.
If you look at them they look pristine shiny as if someone just placed those numbers on last week.

I can't speak to the use on it, but I also just noticed that the "end" of the bottom of the #2 goes up in the GFC jersey and is straight in the Giants photos with the similar diagonal #2 font.

Re: GFC Joe Morris Giants
Eric-
The following information is posted on the Grey Flannel Auction website:
Except in very few instances can the provenance of game-used items and autographed items be definitely traced and attributed to an athlete or individual, even when a letter from a team is provided. The following paragraphs discuss the processes used by Grey Flannel Auctions to authenticate lots in our auction. As a result of those processes, based on the information available to Grey Flannel Auctions, we are very comfortable in stating that "in our opinion" the items in our auction are authentic. Therefore, every lot in this auction will be sold "As Is," no exceptions.
All of our jersey authenticators are under the incredibly discerning eye of Nick Coppola, who has been collecting jerseys over 30 years and has carefully and separately looked at every game-used jersey in this auction. Our jersey authenticating team includes Richard Russek, who has been in the hobby for 20 years and T.J. Favilla who worked at Yankee Stadium for 4 years. We will note in the lot descriptions if other letters come in addition to ours.
Our many years of experience have led us to choose all of the above experts. We believe they are the very best that exist. There is very little science to authenticating in this hobby, mostly opinion. If you disagree, we warmly invite you to make arrangements to have your authenticator come inspect any and all items you are interested in before the auction.
Have you contacted Richard, Nick or T.J. with your concerns? If possible, I'd suggest communicating directly with Nick, as the above information notes, "...has carefully and separately looked at every game-used jersey in this auction". I'd suggest forwarding your findings and photos and seek answers as to what they used to determine the authenticity and year of use for this particular jersey in question (or as noted, their "opinion"). Based on the 54 years of combined expereince of the three Grey Flannel workers, certainly they must have insight that will confirm the legitimacy of this particular jersey.

Re: GFC Joe Morris Giants
As a Giants collector, I have never seen numbers like that. Here is a previous thread with a few nice jerseys. There isnt an '88, but there is an '87 and '89 that have the thicker font and different tagging:

I have seen retail jerseys with the "Designed Exclusively For..." tag and I would say this is a retail jersey.

Re: GFC Joe Morris Giants
i actually did send TJ an email about the Joe Morris font question. I asked if they had any pictures of the font style in a game.
He has answered my other questions very quickly, so I look forward to hearing something soon.

Re: GFC Joe Morris Giants
Eric,
For what it's worth, you would not see this variety of Sand-Knit tagging on a jersey manufactured 1982-84. You would expect to see some sort of Medalist Sand-Knit tagging, not this kind of MacGregor Sand-Knit tagging.
