    Legendary Auctions-Ex-Halper Collection

I am interested in some of the game used baseball jerseys in the current Legendary Auctions, with some listed as the "Ex-Halper" collection.

-I've heard that Barry Halper accquired most of his game used items directly from the player...is this true?

-I understand that after Mr. Halpers passing, the Sotheby's Auction house auctioned off all his collection...so, should the items in Legendary Auctions that are "Ex-Halper" be listed in that auction from 1999? If so, does anyone have a catalog to verify this?

-If the item is NOT in that Sotheby's auction, does anyone know if there was another means on how Mr. Halpers memorabilia could have entered the collectors market?

    Any insight would be appreciated...

Halper consigned the items in 1999. He died in 2005, i think the reason he sold them was so his family did not have to go through the trouble or maybe he wanted to split up the money between family. I'm not sure which one. You can also buy a catalog but it only shows 1,500 or 2,000 lots. Then they had a huge online auction.

Thanks for the information....I did a query at Sothebys.com for the 1999 Barry Halper Auction and couldn't find the jersey I was looking for...when was the on-line auction?

Thanks again...I believe the jersey I am most interested in must have been on the on-line auction as I could not find it in the 1999 catalog...

    Re: Legendary Auctions-Ex-Halper Collection

Most of the modern jerseys were given to Halper by the players. Halper was a minority Yankees owner and well known collector well known to MLB players. He was friends with Rose, DiMaggio, Brett, Mantle, Billy Martin, etc.

There was a 2nd Sotheby's auction of Halper stuff. So Sotheby's sold stuff that was not in the main catalog. Lots sold via Sotheby's usually had a Sotheby's/Halper tag and Sotheby's document.

I believe approx. 1/3 of Halper's collection was sold Sotheby's, 1/3 went to the Hall of Fame and the remainder stayed with Halper, kept and or dispensed in other ways. So it is possible to get Halper items in non-Sotheby's ways-- thought most is via Sotheby's.

Of note, I believe Bill Mastro ran the Sotheby's Halper auction, as was working for Sotheby's at the time, and Rob Lifson was also involved.

The Sotheby's Halper auction was held in October of 1999.
