batting helmets

out of all the thousand's of helmets that have been used since introduced in 1955, there sure are slim pickins out there!
there is nothing out there except football helmets and other junk. are collectors as well as regular folks hoarding them? i understand the fact that they were more than likely send to the minors for use.
out of everything i collect, that is the one item that is harder to get.

I suspect that there are not many out there because unlike bats a player most likely uses only one a season or maybe for several years unless they get broken. About the only way they could get broken is by being hit, which happens rarely, or the player throwing them down, which is also rare. So I would think game used helmets would last a long time and be in short supply to collectors.
