Black Armbands for Alanta Braves 1978-1980

I came across this Bob Horner card (81 Donruss). Didn't the Braves switch to a completely different style in 1980? I would think this is what they wore from 1976-1979. Also, I could not find anything about the the black arm band. I know they wore one in 1984 for former player and coach Tommie Aaron.

Is it just me, or does it look like that might not be an armband but rather a sort of "censor" mark to cover an "improper" word (ala Billy Ripken bat) or a team name or logo or something that wasn't allowed to be on the card. It looks like too square of a box ... or are my eyes just tired from all the fireworks last night?

Here's Joe Niekro's 1981 Fleer card. Since Fleer and Donruss both released their first baseball sets in many years in 1981, I think they probably had to purchase some of their photos from whichever sources were available. The Horner and Niekro photos are from 1979, in my opinion.

Here's a 1980 Bob Horner card, to further prove the jersey(s) are from 1979.

This is very interesting! That blows my theory out of the water. Hope someone much wiser can solve this!

Just spoke with someone about this. The arm bands were apparently worn in late 1979 and appeared on road tops only. We're not sure who the bands were for. I'll try and find out.

            I'm guessing Bill Lucas.

The official website of the Atlanta Braves with the most up-to-date information on scores, schedule, stats, tickets, and team news.

I used to have a Dale Murphy GU road jersey that had it. It was the only year the pullovers had names on back. They didn't have the arm band on there at the start of the season obviously as Lucas died a couple months in. I would sure think there were on the home AND road jerseys though, doesn't make sense that it would be road only.

I remember doing a ton of research, going through newspaper microfilm and more to authenticate the jersey and everything checked out perfectly, from the armband to the jersey having name on back but it was so long ago I don't remember much now.

I sold the jersey along time ago. One of my many hobby regrets!

I didn't want to start a new thread, due to the fact were still talking memorial stuff. I noticed the 1988 Mark Birkbeck Dunruss card shows him wearing the road knit with with the SULLY patch. I thought these were worn in 1986? Interesting enough, Birkbeck was with the team in 1986, however he wore #41 then. The 88 card clearly shows him wearing #40, which is what he wore 1987 through 1989. Granted, this is proably a 1987 photo (for the 88 card) but that means they were wearing these patches in 87. It appears it is a spring training photo, so it seems even more odd that this could be a 1988 spring photo?

The photo was from 1987 spring training...the release dates of the regular issue baseball card sets were such in the day that the cards often came out before the spring games had even started.
