70's Red Sox Jerseys in Hunt's Auction

So what are we to make of the large set of jerseys that closed tonight at Hunts. They have both Pawsox and Redsox stitching, mcauliffe tagging, etc. Perhaps they are private-ordered, but why were they remade if not by the Pawsox/redsox. If someone were ordering, would they really order Diego Segui and the other commons here...and then change the numbers? Also note that the first link is actually Tiant's #23, not Burleson...looks like a typo by Hunts.

    Here are some lots:

Re: 70's Red Sox Jerseys in Hunt's Auction

Matt, I took some time to see if I could figure out what was going on here. I don't buy into Hunt's explanation of the Red Sox restoring minor league jerseys back to the original. Why would they go to the time and expense? To re-use them in Boston? Yeah Right. By the time those jerseys would have been returned, there would have been at least 2 years backlog on hand. Here's a look lot by lot of what was listed and the reality of each lot.

Lot 118 House/ Hobson- This jersey is the wrong size ( 38) for both players ( 42)

Lot 119 Cooper- This MAY be ok as it matches size wise. However, the back 7 is much larger than the 1 which would seem to indicate a possible change/ replacement.

Lot 120 Popowski/ Tiant Wrong size for Popowski, This jersey May have been a Tiant as he wore a size 43 that year.

Lot 121 Cleveland/ Montgomery Wrong size for Cleveland. May have been Montgomery. 33 is a bad restoration.

Lot 122 Burleson/ Tiant Wrong size for both players.

Lot 123 Petrocelli/Beniquez Wrong size for Petrocelli May have been Beniquez size based on size.

Lot 124 Cleveland Wrong size Jersey is listed as a 44L Cleveland was a 42

Lot 125 Miller/ Didier May have been Didier, jersey was originally ordered for Correll

Lot 126 Stange/ Johnson May have been Johnson jersey was originally ordered for Cepeda.

Lot 127 Darrell Johnson This one may be ok

Lot 128 Kennedy This one may be ok

Lot 129 Guerrero/ Skok wrong size for both players.

Lot 130 Petrocelli/ Johnson This jersey may have originally been a Petrocelli

Lot 131 Segui/ Clemons Wrong size for both players

Lot 132 Burleson Wrong size for Burleson

So if I look at the Red Sox portion of this auction they listed 15 items and mis- described 12 of them-- Pretty bad.

These listings were another example of looking at the tags and the number and letting it go at that. When you have multiples of the same player and the same year but in different sizes during this era ('70's) here's a hint-- at least one of the jerseys is not what you think it is.

    Lon -

Thanks for taking the time to look at these. I am with you on the sizes, yet here is what bothers me. If some of these are authentic, then all are likely game used Red Sox jerseys (though not necessarily used by the player attributed...but not private orders) The Hunts print catalog tells the story of the consignor who had a connection with the pawsox and got all these long ago). They all have the BOSTON stitching over the Pawsox older stitching, and most have some alterations and number replacement. In 1977, the Sox gave the Pawsox a bunch of old (quite possibly the early 70's jerseys here) as recounted in many sources (here from wikipedia):

"As for the name PawSox, the origins are traced back to the first season in which Mondor owned the club. Three weeks before the 1977 season began the team lacked uniforms, despite having been rescued from bankruptcy. Former Boston GM Haywood Sullivan stepped in and sent Pawtucket 48 sets of old home and away uniforms from the parent club. Although the home uniforms were fine for the team to use, the road uniforms had "Boston" stitched across the chest, which was a problem. Then Pawtucket GM Mike Tamburro, who is currently the organization's President, suggested using the moniker "PawSox" across the front, with each unstitched "Boston" letter replaced with one that spelled "PawSox."

Sounds quite plausible if the understiching is really as described. So i will speculate that it is possible these lots from the Mass consigner could be some of those jerseys. They may not be used by the players Hunts lists, but I feel they may be genuine based on the wear, the tagging and the odd assortment of numbers that matches the 73-74 sox.

Still I can't account for why the Sox would take them back and stitch Boston on them.. In any case, I bought one to investigate and will post pics when I get it. Don't worry, I have no intention of reselling. I might even wear it to games at the price I paid.

Hunts states "Team change" for numbers, how do they know that?
