    Wilson flannel sizing question

I'm trying to gauge whether a Wilson flannel (from the late 1960's) possibly contains an incorrect size tag. If one were to measure from the bottom of the left armpit to the bottom of the right armpit, what is the typical length (across) for a Wilson size 44? size 42? size 40?

    Your opinions are greatly appreciated.

With flannel jerseys from the 50s and 60s, Wilson used "metric" sizing. This means a chest measurement would be almost 4 full inches bigger than the size tag. A size 40 might measure 22 inches from armpit to armpit.
This is my knowledge going by memory, so it is not carved in stone. However, I have owned many Wilson made flannels from this era that were marked considerably smaller than the actual measurements.
