OT - Report - Mauer signs extension
It looks like he will remain there for another 10 years,if true....huge lockup. He would have been the biggest free agent of all time if he hit the open market at year-end.

Mauer Reaches Preliminary Extension Agreement?
By Tim Dierkes [February 1 at 3:05pm CST]
3:05pm: WCCO TV's Mark Rosen reports that Mauer and the Twins reached a preliminary agreement on a 10-year extension. Such a contract would take him through the 2020 season, at which point he'd be 37.
10:32am: Joe Mauer may soon sign a contract extension with the Twins, believes Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Two Christensen sources take the good vibes even further, suggesting the number of years and guaranteed money is already agreed upon. Christensen's take on a Mauer extension: "It's a matter of when, not if."
If Mauer is locked up, Victor Martinez will jump to the top of the projected free agent catcher class for the 2010-11 offseason.

Agreed, Bill...if this is accurate, it's gratifying to see that, with Mauer and the Twins, loyalty is a 2-way street.!

Re: OT - Report - Mauer signs extension
Mauer wouldn't raise the bar from prior contracts offered because he has class. He has been quoted as saying that he is not looking to break the bank. He just wants to play baseball with the team he grew up loving and idolizing. Joe Mauer may be one of the last gems in baseball in this regard. Sure, he will be paid millions. But will it be Arod or Jeter millions? Probably not. The Twins can't afford that! But Jeter and Arod are overpayed in my opinion....no one should be paid those amounts to play a game.

Re: OT - Report - Mauer signs extension
I would agree that he has always displayed class and humility. I am saying he would probably have received record setting offers. He certainly would not have to take them, as I am sure no one here would sign one either, right?

Re: OT - Report - Mauer signs extension
Don't get me wrong, he will get paid alot of money. But it won't be as ridiculous as alot of these contracts we see are.
It would be hard to turn down a ginormous contract offer (say from another team) as it is free money, but really after the first $30 million, how much more value does another $200 million hold? I mean if you could choose between being paid $100 million and finish your career with your childhood team AND possibly win a World Series or two, or being paid $270 million and playing for the Yankees or the Red Sox or whoever. Sure you may win a World Series there too, but its just not the same. Especially for Mauer. If he leaves Minnesota, then nothing else is sacred anymore. (a joke of course)
