MLB Authentication getting specific I LIKE!!

I noticed lately the Authentication process for MLB is getting more detailed.

I know they have been doing this for a while with baseballs such as Ball pitched by (so & so) during xxx inning.

But they didn't do it much for bats until lately.

I have aquired a couple of bats and one was cracked.

It actually listed the game, the player who used the bat, the inning it was cracked, & the pitcher that was on the mound when the bat cracked.

I think this is fantastic especially for those who either try to photomatch there bats, It gives you a more detailed idea of when exactly the bat was used during which innings. Also this is great to find out what hits this was used for.

My cracked bat which I still have a bit of more narrowing down on - but so far I believe it was used to hit 2 doubles & 2 triples from back to back games!!

I agree. I have one bat that has all of that detail, it makes it much easier to just go to the inning and see the player crack it then having to watch every at bat of their's

Now if only we could get the official pitch by pitch log to identify broken bats in the box score and/or game log...

This additional detail has been practically helpful for me as well. Somebody tried to sell me a bat as a HR bat, the MLB Authentication proved the bat was used in a game in which a HR was hit; however the HR was hit in the 8th inning and the bat was, per MLB, broken in the 5th inning. So clearly not the bat that hit that 8th inning HR.

The more detail the better! I definitely appreciate their efforts to provide more detail.

I don't bid on bats from MLB.com personally, but anytime specific information is addressed, it makes authentication and customer comfort greater. Nice idea, MLB.

I think it depends on the individual authenticator. I recently questioned a bat that was listed in the database as a "Todd Helton Game Used Baseball Bat" because I checked MLB.TV and it didn't look like Helton used the bat in the game that was referenced. MLB Authentication responded, "We have talked with the authenticator and they have confirmed that the only info they have was that the bat was a Todd Helton model bat. They had no list of who used it."

          That was a little disturbing!

I was thinking the same. I'm wondering if the "good news" is just certain authenticators being meticulous instead of new training used by all authenticators. I just don't see any consistency, so far, to say this is a policy of MLB Authentication, where descriptions are more detailed for all items. If it was a noticeable change across the board, then it would be great news.

Well I think the first question to ask is when was the bat from? 2009? 2008? 2007? etc.....

Also remember that MLB doesn't always authenticate to the exact game, sometimes to authenticate to just when the bats were collected. Is it possible the Todd Helton was collected on such date that you have referenced too?? Have you checked previous games to see if he used it before the date???

So this could be a new praice being used across the board but just so happens the Todd Helton bat was apart of a specific game when the bats were collected from that game or was it Authenticated from some timme ago.

As I mentioned I noticed this practice being more detailed of some of my recent bats I picked up.

If this is not a new practice being implemented to being detailed than I do agree it should be and it would be great if they did.

                Hi Jason,

I just looked up 2009 bat with MLB holograms on Ebay for examples. Not many but you can figure out what other bats are out there with successive records. Here are three teams from 2009: Dodger, Padres, and the Rockies. Notice the nice detail on the Dodger and Padres bat and then look at the brief description of the Rockies bats. The bats from the Dodgers and the Padres were documented earlier than the Rockies bats too. Also notice how the Dodger are the only ones who mention the inning the bat was broken.

Corrections. I need to give proper credit.

The bats in the Dodgers list were authenticated in San Diego and Los Angeles
The bats in the Padres list were authenticate in Chicago.
The bats in the Rockies list were authnticated in Colorado.

Wow. No wonder Jason think they are doing a better job. The authenticators at Yankee Stadium a top notch describers compared to Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago or Colorado. And your example is a 2008 bat. I like how the authenticator in Los Angeles says Blake uses a "ARUCCI" bat.

It would be very interesting if we could get an authenticater to answer some questions & see how its done. Let me first say its a great program & were lucky to have this in baseball. Like any program, there is human error involved...I could show examples of this, psa, steiner..etc...all where human error was made is authenticating items. I think this MLB authentic program is still evolving. On one hand, maybe the authenticater has access to only so much info at the time of authenticating...he should never assume anything. Are all the items gathered & brought to him at the end of a game, or is he collecting the items as the game progresses??
Heres a couple examples, both in Detroit, but the LATER one has less information...different authenticaters? different info provided to them??
I think us on the forum, we are the exceptions most of the time, we are "captain technicals" when it comes to our items & the history. I think we all love this forum because its the only place where we can learn from others about our hobby. Most places we go to buy items, we know more than the seller, its their job, not their passion like it is for us. (sorrY I rambled on...)

Joelsabi exactly that proves my point.

The Rockies bats could of just been collected on that date doesn't mean it was actually used on that specific date which of course then no details would be able to be provided.
