Re: Pawn Shops: Anyone find valuable sports collectibles there?

The wife and I went there two weeks ago when we were in Vegas - on Saturday. I saw NO Sports stuff other than the rings mentioned earlier.

The shop is very small and none of the 'principals' from the show are there on weekends is what we were told. They are all Mon-Fri only.

Also went to Field of Dreams at Caesar's Palace Forum Shops - wanted just to meet Rose... just my luck, the weekend we were there was one of the few weekends he wasn't in Vegas!

    All the best -

    Chris

A few years ago a Pawn Shop in Miami had a 1971 AFC Championship Ring. The ring was on E Bay.It was a team doctor's ring. Before I decided to buy it I did a little research.Sure enough it was stolen.I was able to help the doctor get his ring back.

Did anyone see the show "Pawn Stars" on History channel this week? Had a guy bring in a "Lou Gehrig signed baseball jersey" The signature looked way to good and new and the guy took $3,000 for it. The LOA's were in my opinion "questionable at best" A jersey signed by Lou Gerhig would be at least worth 50k. Anyone find this amusing? Especially the story of farmers having it and had Lou sign it while barmstorming or something like that.

          Jason

I love that Show !!!!!!! I thought it was funny how the guy wanted 10k for for it, and ended up getting 3k. And after was like I am happy with how much i got. Didn't seem right to me

I believe Rick knew it was a phony, but he could re-sell it because of the 3 iron-clad, rock-solid LOAs. Could Sammy give his opinion of this Gehrig "piece"? How "bout those authentication companies? Fly-by-night? Personally, I believe this jersey is from the 1950s and Gehrig signed it around 2007. Did anyone see the episode with the 4 '67 Pete Roses? Rick said they were counterfeits. I don't think so. Many 67s in my collection have bad printing. Who's gonna fake a "67 Rose? Pawn Stars is still my favorite show with American Pickers not far behind.

When i saw that episode i thought the same thing. The guy even said he had them in his garage for like 25 years. They looked good to me also
The jersey is still on the original seller's website....can anyone say CHRISTOPHER MORALES?

              Right here Manram:

Tom Tresh busts Pawn Stars: They buy a Lou Gehrig signed jersey for $3,000--and it's the only one known! If it were real it could bring 6-figures.

Thanks Mr. Tresh for your insight. Next Time I watch "Porn Stars", I will be very wary of items brought into the "Porn Store".

Folks, it's a TV show. Newsflash...everything on TV and on the internet is not always true.

                  Very true and I agree...

Just thought that some folks would like to see the item in it's original home. I just posted the link as an update to the thread.

I'm glad you posted this. I knew the Gehrig was bogus. After the show originally aired, I read countless forums and message boards and others thought the same thing. I don't watch "Pawn Stars" to learn about Sports Memorabilia or any other collectable for that matter.
When buying, I follow the mantra of this very forum:
                    "do your homework".

                      True -

When I saw it the first time, I told my wife - "I'll bet there is someone watching this show that is thinking...GREAT deal on that Gherig jersey"...

The jersey did get people talking, and if that's what the producers were after, they got what they wanted.

                      That's TV for ya.

Nice Find I knew there was A Issue with that Jersey because it went for so little.

Do you guys remember I posted this forum about those baseball bats I bought at an estate sale? Well, it turned out that I got all 15 bats for $40.00 total. I didn't realize I had 2 prized possessions (which were game used bats). Sold one for $25.00 and sold the other for $10.00. Then another guy asked for those little league Mickey Mantle baseball bats. Sold 2 for $12.00. In the end, I got all of my money back. Now there' someone out there who wants to buy the other 4 bats for $25.00 total.

Things are looking good but profit is very very slow.

I found couple Olympic tickets. Some sketch arts.

Best thing I ever purchased was an original Sunday comic of KRAZY KAT by George Herriman.

As for sports collectibles - nothing much except for starting lineups which are mostly junk now (thanks to McFarlane toys).
